Great Sand Dunes Lodge

The closeness of the San Dunes, the Geometric Dome stay that includes star-watching.

I enjoyed my stay.

The Lodge is incredibly well located, close to the Great Sand Dunes. It provides a variety of accommodation options, from camping to more traditional rooms. We opted for a less expensive geodesic dome, one room with queen bed, bathrooms located a short walk away, and a cute skylight for night sky viewing. Overall, it served our needs quite well. We enjoyed a picnic dinner on the front porch watching the sunset over the San Juan mountains, illuminating the dunes with evening light. We also had the opportunity to chat with other residents of adjacent domes, all of us checking something new out. The walk to the bathrooms was fine, if a bit inconvenient at night. The bathrooms themselves are snug but clean, and have everything you might need for a short stay. Breakfast in the lodge was okay but not special We departed for the dunes before the adjacent restaurant opened.

The staff person at registration was abrupt but informative. Probably gets tired of running through the same spiel all day. The skylight in the dome didn't offer much nigh sky viewing, because of odd reflections from the highly illuminated lodge grounds.

Location, location, location. Just a short drive to the entrance to Great Sand Dunes NP, the lodge has fabulous views of the dunes from every room. Our deluxe king room was big and equipped with a fridge and microwave and there was a private Outdoor seating area. There is also a handy shop/diner by the lodge so you can grab a bite and pick up supplies.

The breakfast offering was pretty basic.

Location was excellent. Great to see Humming birds and mountain Blue birds on the feeders. The night sky is amazing.

No option to get evening meal. Had to travel to Alamosa at the end of long traveling day (about half hour each way) to visit the Sand Dunes. No drinking water provided in room.
