About this cottage rental

NOTE: We normally rent from Saturday to Saturday, so please try to honor those days if at all possible. If you MUST make an exception, please ask to see if we can work it out for you.

We feel we have one of the best views in Ireland, located right on Galway Bay on the 'Wild Atlantic Way', and in a picturesque, friendly little village only 1 hour from Shannon Airport. The cottage also has great views of the famous Burren Mountains out back. We know you would enjoy your stay here as much as we have so many times for 28 years.
The owners have lived in the cottage full time for several years and have made many improvements inside and out during this time. The cottage is completely re-wired, and new kitchen cabinets installed. We also have made an effort to present this as a typical 1950's cottage. Because of this you may find some inconveniences, however we have tried our best to make you comfortable. The cottage has a queen bed in the master BR, and two single beds in the small BR, so it comfortably sleeps 4. The living room has 2 Futon couches, which could sleep 2 more adults, but, with only one bathroom and the cottage being quite small, it is too tight for more than 4 people, unless you are VERY friendly!
Ballyvaughan village is a one mile picturesque walk along the coast, and has a variety of shops worth visiting as well as a number of fine pubs and restaurants. Centra market also has a wide range of food you can purchase if you want to cook at home, and the cottage is equipped with most every cooking utensil you might need. Traditional music can be heard at some of the pubs in town on certain nights - you'll have to inquire as to schedules, etc. Music starts around 10PM.
The Ballyvaughan area is a mecca for walking and a Burren trail map is available at Centra Market in the village centre. There is a fine beach off the road to Kinvara about 2 miles outside the village known as Bishop's Quarter. The College of the Burren (Art College), off the road to Lisdoonvarna, has a walking trail as well as a restored castle worth seeing. Rainy day activities include Ailwee Cave, not far from town, which features prehistoric bear dens in addition to impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It also has an excellent gourmet shop worth visiting, with Burren made cheese and other tasty treats.
For the golfers, Lahinch is only a half hour drive, and the Galway Bay golf course in Oranmore features a fabulous setting on the Bay and is only a 45 minute drive as well.
If you are not driving or don't want to drive, there are two efficient taxi services in town, and there are bus schedules in the cottage to Galway and other areas with return times. These leave from Centra Market in town. We are sure that you would have a great time here and enjoy the cottage and the area as much as we have!.

Four adults stayed in this lovely cottage perfectly located on Galway Bay. Friends referred us and we will refer others without a doubt. We flew into Shannon Airport and drove approx. 1 hour to the cottage. The morning view of the Bay each morning with coffee/tea was fabulous. Visiting Doolin Ferry to the Aran Islands, Galway, Kylemore Abbey from here was easy. The Burren surrounding us was great for hiking and to see Aillwee caves with the birds of Prey sanctuary allowing the audience to be a falconer during the presentation. The cottage was comfortable for all of us. The Centre Market was a quick trip to downtown and has everything needed to cook-in and the people working there are superb. Mini apple pies in a bag were yummy. Also, pick up some Irish Turkey Burgers too. We absolutely loved these with some fresh Brioche buns from the market. Make reservations at Monk's Pub to secure your selected mealtimes. The food here was very good and the staff friendly. Caution - desserts are big! Leaving the cottage to continue our journey throughout Ireland felt like I was actually leaving home. Had a little heart pang which surprised me personally. This was a memory making stay and magical time for myself, husband, brother and Sister-in-law on our first trip to Ireland.

A beautifully quaint cottage on the bay. Cozy and well furnished. The views from the front window were spectacular and we enjoyed the walk in to town. It was convenient to Monks restaurant and a short drive to the Centra grocery store. Bus was easy to catch at Centra if you want to go to Galway for the day. The cottage had written instructions that covered just about everything. It was spotless and fresh when we arrived. The shower in the bathroom is a little tight but we were able to manage just fine. If you are looking for a true Irish cottage to stay in, I highly recommend this one.

Plan this for a calm day unless you are a good sailor! All facilities were as expected and comfortable with great selection of dishes and utensils in the kitchen. Would recommend.

A beautiful, happy cottage that has plenty of dishes, glasses, utensils, books, a large refrigerator, plenty of books, WiFi, wonderful view and a quiet place to enjoy life. The convenience of a washer and dryer was really special. Ok, the shower is a bit tight, but it IS bigger than some I have been in, in Italy..😳. Love Ballyvaughan and the cozy cottage! Our stay was wonderful. The cottage was well equipped and the location could not have been better, We did not rent a car and had no problem navigating from Dublin via Galway by train and bus. Mr. Connolly the taxi man even gave us a free ride to the bus stop as we had too much luggage to walk. The property manager and the owner made sure we were well taken care of. We highly recommend staying here!

We didn't let the description stop us from coming here as a family with 2 teens. As can be seen in the pictures, the cottage is beautifully situated on the shore (without direct water access) in Galway Bay. There was no direct contact with the administration, only by telephone. The cottage itself is small. The beds in the chamber were just enough for teenagers. There was hardly any space available for several suitcases. The living room and kitchen offer enough space for 2 or 3 people, but it will be too tight for 4. The cottage itself has great potential due to its location. Unfortunately the rooms are in need of renovation. The paint on the ceiling is cracked almost everywhere and there are spiders. The kitchen is equipped with a washing machine, but there is also a dryer in the adjacent building (garage). The kitchen appliances are OK, but old and in need of maintenance. There is no dishwasher. The rooms will be electrically heated, unfortunately the humidity is always high. We still had a good time in the cottage and had many trips to Connemara National Park and the Burren National Park We were also able to use the beautiful beaches, which are difficult to reach without a car. A quick point about the location. Very small and the only option was the small SPAR. Larger shops take at least 10 minutes to arrive. There are several pubs and restaurants in town that offer live music. For the cottage I summarize, with a bit energy, paint and spare parts it will be return to beauty

Unfortunately, we needed roadside assistance on the way from Dublin to Ballyvaughan. Therefore, we arrived later at the cottage than expected and did not meet the manager when we arrived. We only spoke in the morning and evening on the phone. We felt a bit bad when we learned after our arrival that our sent messages with updates about our situation were not received, so calling her in case of an emergency might be better. Check-in, however, went smoothly. Mr. Considine sent a very detailed email with directions and a lot of information about the cottage and Ballyvaughan beforehand, so we were prepared well ahead. The cottage itself is small but cozy and beautifully decorated. The beds are comfortable and everything is clean. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need for a weeklong stay, and you have a washer and dryer in the shed. And the view! You have a gorgeous view of Galway Bay, and you can sit in the beautiful front yard and enjoy the ever-changing scenery. It is only a short walk into town where you find several restaurants, pubs, cafés, and a small grocery store. The location of the cottage is fantastic to do some hikes, and the drive along the coastal road is spectacular! Besides relaxing, we visited Doolin, took a ferry to the Aran Islands, walked along the Cliffs of Moher, visited Galway, Kilmore Abbey, Connemara National Park, and the Burren. We enjoyed our stay very much in this lovely place. Highly recommended!

We love Ballyvaughan! And this Cottage on the bay has been the perfect stay for us for three summers now for a week of walking/hiking, relaxing, sightseeing, and taking in the music and sights of this area of Ireland. It's clean, easy for self-catering, and a short walk to the village for groceries or getting a bite to eat or a pint. It's exactly as described, so check out the pictures and read to see if it's a good fit. If you want to relax and decompress and immerse in what the Burren landscape has to offer, then this is the perfect place.

We had a most enjoyable stay at this little cottage. It is a clean well kept cottage with a great location. It has a beautiful view of Galway Bay as well as the Bureen. Well stocked kitchen and a washer/ dryer. Lots of hot water! It was an easy walk into town where there were some good restaurants and a small grocery store. The cottage is very centrally located to many interesting sites to visit. Driving the Wild Atlantic way is Just spectacular. Checking in was a breeze. It was a magical week. I highly recommend it.

We loved our week here, the ever changing views over Galway Bay, the Burren rising out back, the short walks into the Ballyvaughan, the shelves lined with books, sitting outside surrounded by plants and flowers that bring joy to a botanist (me). It was peaceful and relaxing, just what we needed after the bustle of Dublin. And it was a great home base for day trips into the burren, to the cliffs, to the Aran Islands, and to Galway City..

This was such a lovely cottage. It was everything that was promised. The location could not have been better. A perfect starting point for seeing Western Ireland. The town is lovely and everyone was incredibly welcoming. The scenery from the front yard is almost enough to keep you from going anywhere but with so much nearby adventure is just down the road. Ballyvaughan is the perfect spot to spend time and see the beauty and culture of County Claire. We loved visiting the Whiskey Bar and meeting the owner, Margaret. The Tea Shop just a block away was superb. The hike with our guide, Shane Connolly, in the Burren was fantastic. We enjoyed the views of the ocean from the house and yard, meeting the charming people in the town and travelling around such gorgeous countryside. The cottage was comfortable. We had everything we needed and much more. Thanks to Richard for his clear and helpful instructions to get to the cottage and for all the tips that were provided.

Ballyvaughan is a wonderful village and so close to everything you could want to see in the area! It may not be a huge, modern house, but Rick's cottage is everything you could possibly want for a short or long stay to enjoy the area! It is comfortable and contains everything you need! It is close enough to the village to walk, but I would tend not to do it when it is dark - combination of narrow road and no street lights! Also, everyone in the village was very welcoming! What a great place to stay!

We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay in Ballyvaughan! We fell in love with everything about this quaint, little village, including the cottage. It was the best home base and centrally located which allowed us to have incredible day trips with a comforting home to return to at the end of each day. The cottage had everything we needed...with even more than we could have imagined. We were so lucky to have spent a week in Ireland at a time where they had the best weather. Sitting in the yard, facing Galway Bay with a glass of wine, watching the sunset, the antics of gulls, swallows, terns and our small "herd" of donkeys brought a peaceful closing to each day. Each morning brought us a spectacular sunrise over the bay. We definitely would like to return and highly recommend this experience to everyone. Highly recommend An Fulacht Fia as an exceptional dining experience, a bike ride on the Aron Islands, a guided tour of the Burren's by Shane Connelly, a night of trad session at The Greene's with Sean Tyrrell, a view of the Cliff's of Moher, Aillwee Cave and the Birds of Prey.....just a few of the highlights. Take a day to drive along the Wild Atlantic Way and be prepared to stop in many charming villages and pubs as well as shops that carry authentic local wool sweaters, scarves, throws, socks and many food items. Of course, the requisite Irish Coffee and beer is a must!

We very much enjoyed our stay in this wonderful cottage on Galway Bay. We found everything we might need, all was very clean and tidy, and the setting was spectacular…. we enjoyed every minute of being there from the gorgeous sunrises to seeing the lights of Galway across the bay at night. Loved identifying some of the different coastal birds that were right there too (happened to bring a Birds of Ireland book with us that turned out to be very handy !). We did several delightful walks (the Ballyvaughan wood loop as well as the Carran loop), took the boat to see the Cliffs of Moher, enjoyed the very informative sheepdog demonstration at Caherconnell Fort, went to Galway for the day, and saw various castles, churches, and ruins all of which were fascinating. Enjoyed eating at the various places in town (The Tea nd Garden Rooms a real treat !) and got to cheer County Clare onto victory in the national hurling championships with all the others in Logue’s Lodge! It also worked out beautifully to stay with Gerry and Pauline at their Ballyvaughan B & B for our last night before flying home…what a breakfast they offer ! I could go on and on about our trip….but suffice it to say that all went beautifully and this great cottage was the centerpiece of our experience.

It really is difficult to communicate how wonderful this place is. True, it is perfectly situated to take hikes in the Burren, to spend some time in Galway, to see the Cliffs of Moher, and to check off all the activities in your guide book. But more than that, it is a comfortable, warm place to live. Some of our happiest hours were sitting in the kitchen, or in the sitting room, or in the front, and gazing at Galway Bay. Or taking a leisurely walk into town to say hello to the folks at O'Lochlainn's Whisky Bar, or having a pint at Greene's. There seem to be no residents of Ballyvaughan who are not friendly and helpful. Thank you, Rick!

The reviews on this cottage are so overwhelmingly positive that I expected to be at least a LITTLE disappointed. I wasn't at all. We had an absolutely wonderful vacation in Ballyvaughan. The cottage is exactly as described, cozy and quiet and in the greatest location I think we've ever stayed. It is very private even though though it's right on the main road, which makes it the perfect base camp from which to complete day trips. We went to a couple of castles and a number of pubs that are listed in all the travel guides, but our favorite experience was an abbey in Quin that we just happened upon - it was amazing. The food was outstanding everywhere we went - our favorite was Moran's Seafood Restaurant between Ballyvaughan and Galway. L'Arco in Ballvaughan is excellent too. We spent every morning with our coffee and every evening with a glass of wine sitting on the front lawn, watching the water, listening to the birds and talking about life. It's heaven! We'll be back someday!

Yes, this will be another review raving about how perfect the cottage and it's location were. Specifically, the view from the cottage is incredible, the front and back constantly changing with the weather. The kitchen was very well stocked, very clean and efficiently laid out. We made our own breakfast every day and cooked dinner four times as well. If you enjoy cooking don't miss the opportunity to buy your own rack of lamb and cook it in the little oven. It was perfection. The Spar store in town had lots of little things to buy, rashers of bacon, eggs, etc. If you want to really cook drive to the town of Kinvarra. The grocery store there had everything, big wine selection, great looking fish counter, and the afore mentioned lambie. Of course, there are plenty of good places locally to eat. I personally loved the Tea & Garden Rooms and Au Falacht Fia, which wasn't as expensive as some think. The local people really made the special. Gerry helped us settle in, gave us some ideas of places to visit and told us to call if we had any questions. Everyone was very friendly and anxious to please. The pubs in the village were fun and cozy, fires roaring away. Richard and Marcia have really thought of everything a traveler might need, umbrellas, WIFI, maps and brochures of local places to visit. If we make another trip to Ireland I can't think of anywhere I would rather stay.

My wife and I have stayed at many VRBOs, and most of them have been great. Rick’s cottage at Ballyvaughan, however, is clearly the winner in terms of vacation bang for the buck. The pictures on the website do not capture how lovely and private the cottage is. While the narrow Coast Road (ranked as one of the world’s 10 most scenic drives) runs between the house and the water’s edge, there is almost no traffic on it. Further, because of the landscaping, you cannot see the road from the house. The town of Ballyvaughan is small (pop – 200), but there are five pubs within walking distance from the house. Our biggest surprise was An Fulacht Fia restaurant. It is a short 600 yard stroll from the cottage. We had a truly world class meal there. Practical stuff: The cottage is a 45 minute drive from Shannon Airport. If you have not driven on the left side of the road before, consider forking out the extra money for a car with automatic transmission. We were also happy we added a GPS to the rental car. There is no ATM machine or bank in Ballyvaughan and the offerings in the one local convenient store are limited. The closest ATM and supermarket are in Kinvarra – about a 20 minute drive. The place is special - peaceful, stunning sunsets, and friendly local people. There are loads of places to explore, especially if you get out of your car and hike around the haunting hidden places in the Burren.

This cottage is as delightful as the owner, Rick, describes. We loved every minute of our stay in Ballyvaughan. Fantastic restaurants (An Fulacht Fia; Logues Lodge; and the lovely Tea room)); great location, and the cottage was immaculate, and just charming. I had pictured staying in an authentic Irish cottage and that is precisely what we got. If you are looking for a little cottage that has a great central location to western Ireland, this is the place. Only negative (and this is not Rick's fault), but the driving on the Irish roads scared us half to death...especially the route to Ballyvaughan (we found an alternate route that wasn't quite as bad). Loved, loved this cottage -- absolutely no negatives

This lovely cottage was our introduction to Ireland - the place of my heart. It was located so we could travel and see the sights and just waking to Galway Bay was a treat every morning. The people are friendly and welcoming. We did a stop by this spring and had lunch in Ballyvaughn with the Considines. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the cottage to any one!

I have rented several houses through VRBO sometimes what is described is not what I see when I get there. This one matched the description and photos in every way. And the owners were helpful and hospitable from afar. The house was cozy for my sister and myself. The views of Galway Bay and the Burren were wonderful. We had no idea the house was situated on one of the 10 top most scenic coastal drives. The walk to town was easy. The restaurant selection was amazing for such a small town. This is a great spot from which to tour County Clare and Galway. One of our highlights was hiring a walking guide to tour the Burren. I hope to come back to rent this same house again as I fell in love with Ballyvaughan.

I stayed in this adorable cottage for a week in September 2011. It is everything and more than is described by the owners. It is snug and charming, very nicely furnished, and the kitchen is well equipped. I loved having Galway Bay at the front door, and the vast and otherwordly Burren in the backyard. The beds were comfortable, with clean and fresh linen. It is a short and delightful walk to the village, along the Coast Road. One night i walked home from the Pub at midnight, with the full moon giding my way. The stars were out, and the Bay was filled with silvery waves. That was magical. There are very good restaurants in the village, and the Guiness was good, too! The location is great for daytrips. There is so much to see in a short distance. I am still dreaming of Ballyvaughn everyday. The Burren, the Cliffs, Fanore beach, Galway ciry, and Connemara are calling my name! (as are the donkeys!) Thanks to the Considines for sharing their little piece of heaven.

My husband and I rented this charming cottage years ago when we first came to Ireland, and recently enjoyed a week there. The owners' claim of “at least one of the finest views in Ireland” is quite true! Because Irish weather can be a bit changeable the view changes as well: sunshine, rain, rainbows, tidal changes, sea birds, otters, the lights of Galway City across the Bay looking like diamonds on velvet at night; we were never bored with it. The cottage is small, but very efficient, and we soon realized our "dream house" at home was too big for us; after our first stay here, we went home and downsized! The cottage is well- and lovingly-maintained, and both clean and easy to keep clean. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the new cabinets, added since our original stay, make it perfect. The Manager is very helpful with suggestions, as are the other residents of Ballyvaughan. The village is an ideal base for exploring the Burren, an area full of archeological and historical wonders, and we never ran out of things to see and do. Monk's Pub, the closest pub to the cottage, became our "local" immediately, and we highly recommend it. Ennis, 45 minutes away, is a charming small town, and Galway, an hour away, is a very cosmopolitan city. Both places offer much in the way of performing arts as well as lively shopping and dining. We have shared the cottage with other couples as well as being there on our own, and we would certainly recommend it to friends and relatives.
