Puako Pau Hana is a great place to escape from all your cares! Located in the heart of Puako, you are literally just a few steps to the most beautiful little beach in Puako!
Puako is known for it's magical old fashioned neighborhood feel and remarkable clear water, perfect for diving and snorkeling.
Puako Pau Hana has a great room design, which flows the dining & living room, then beyond to the expansive covered lanai.
The split floor plan features two spacious bedrooms, with a king bed in the primary suite and another king bed in bedroom 2. There are two full bathrooms, all on the ground floor, no stairs!
The home is decorated with antiques, Balinese furniture and local artist painting and artwork.
The expansive covered lanai, with a BBQ & dining area also includes new patio furniture , just kick back and read or take a nap outside in the breezes~
Recently remodeled and upgraded, with new paint, counters, Stainless steel refrigerator with filtered ice maker and cold water in the door, water filter at the kitchen sink, no need to buy bottled water, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and toaster oven, induction cooktops and oven, rice cooker, new large covered BBQ, , you have all you need to enjoy your Hawaii Life!
Just installed Artesian Water Reverse Osmosis water system, no need to buy bottled water!!
There is a wonderful outdoor shower, lots of beach accessories like chairs, umbrellas and ice chest.

We absolutely loved our time here! The beach across is the street was a little rocky for our youngest swimmer but there is a beautiful sandy beach just 8 min north and the beach across the street is still great for exploring tide pools. The rental property is very comfortable for four although my kids were annoyed I was making them share a bed. It was well stocked with towels and other supplies. They have some beach supplies available for use (three chairs, boogie boards, etc.). We liked that the house is a little bit away from the busier resort areas. Highly recommend staying here!

Location, location, location!! Such a beautiful spot on the island with beach access right across the street! Beach 69 is only a few minutes north of the house, and it’s the BEST! The beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, snorkel gear, cooler, and cooler tote bags made our beach days very pleasant! Plus the Manuela’s Malsadas food truck is parked at the intersection of Puako Beach Dr and the highway every day. Mmmmmmm. The home itself was just right for our family of 3 adults. The Nuwave cooktops, outdoor grill, and toaster oven were plenty to cook meals on. The AC kept the bedrooms cool, and the super huge fans in the living and dining room kept those areas enjoyable also. (It’s just plain HOT there, so this was essential to us.) There is a great collection of books to read and a couple board games as well. The backyard lanai has a huge rod for hanging towels and suits to dry. The outdoor shower is fabulous also! I did not realize this was a shared property when I booked it, but don’t let that dissuade you. We never felt awkward or lost our sense of privacy. Thank you, Jan and Johnny, for sharing your home at such a reasonable rate.

This was our second visit to this wonderful property. We love the location and easy access to the water. Fun to see turtles daily and enjoyed the sunsets. The house is well stocked and very comfortable. We enjoyed the backyard as well. Great place to hang out! We will definitely return. Mahalo!!

We had 14 days of comfort and lots of beach time. Cooler and beach chairs were much appreciated as many other places we’ve stayed don’t have them. Doesn’t have a built in stove or oven but the appliances worked well for both. Host was attentive to our needs and brought us apple bananas and flowers from the yard. Quiet and relaxing (except for the fun sounds of the kitties playing upstairs, which made us smile. Thank you!

The hosts have thought of everything. A slice of domestic bliss on the otherwise resort-oriented Kohala Coast. Beautiful and spacious apartment and yard with a private entrance and private outdoor shower in front for rinsing off after beach excursions. They’ve also provided everything you need for a day at the beach, including body boards and kids life vests.

Jan and Johnny have created a comfortable vacation home in a wonderful location. We loved the peace and quiet. The ocean across the street. The sunsets. The lanai. And great access to other nearby beaches that were better for swimming. The bikes were also a very welcome addition for nearby travels. Planning a return trip already!

First time in the area. Loved the proximity to the elements. Many beaches within walking distance, turtles, fine snorkeling, historic sites , and a most comfortable home to return to after a busy day! Bed was super comfy and just a titch of AC at night as it was quite warm.

The location of this home is unbeatable! We had a wonderful time with tide pools in the a.m. and watching the sea turtles & sunsets every evening just steps from the house, then laying on the beach watching shooting stars after the sun went down. House very comfortable, hosts were friendly when they responded Why not 5 stars? Upon arrival we found that the host family lives on the upper level of this house which was not at all advertised in the listing. We specifically filter for private homes when vacationing and paid a premium price over a condo for that privacy. Initially we planned to overlook it but after 2 days of being awoken by very loud footsteps and noises above our bedroom before 7a.m. I messaged the host to let them know we were unhappy about it. I requested a possible small partial refund for the inaccurate listing/inconvenience of being woken up, but that at a minimum advised them to change the listing and please take extra care to be very quiet the following morning until at least after 8am (we would be flying out that day and needed to sleep in a little to try to adjust back to our time zone). Not only did I never receive a response, but that evening they were using power tools upstairs even beyond 10pm and yet again woke us up walking around before 7am the next morning. Additionally, there was a sugar ant issue in the kitchen, only 2 portable cooktop burners (the listing also says there is an oven but it's a portable countertop one) so don't plan on cooking b

We enjoyed our stay at Jan & Johnny's home in Puako. We received quick responses to any questions. The location was perfect in the beautiful community of Puako, with beach access right across the street where we were lucky to view several green turtles in their natural habitat. Would highly recommend!

We'd long wanted to stay in Puako, which is a unique location. It's a bit of an isolated, little enclave which is along the water but still not far to restaurants and resorts. Jan and Johnny's place is extremely comfortable both inside and out. For divers and snorkelers, the outside shower at the entrance and place to hang gear in the back is great. Lounging both inside and out is very comfortable and perfectly set up for the tropical environment. Local bird life was always entertaining. The kitchen is convenient and essential items are well stocked. Jan and Johnny themselves are very welcoming and available for any questions you may have. In one short conversation, Jan gave us several excellent recommendations from food to drink and even to a great shore dive site nearby. I can't imagine nicer hosts. There is a very convenient local store for this neighborhood which stocks any essentials you may need without taking a long drive. Huge bonus - they rent diving gear! Renting a weight belt and tank was fast, easy and cheap and local! As for Puako and the location, we'd take the nightly walk of 30 seconds across the road to view the resting turtles and the sunset. There are multiple local shore access points for snorkeling and shore diving. We did one time walk to a local resort (Fairmont) for lunch. You'll find it harder and harder to leave as time goes on.

We’ve been coming to stay at this Puako Beach rental for over 20 years now, and it never disappoints. The location, cleanliness and true aloha vibe run strong in this sweet cottage and quiet little town. The home hosts, Jan and Johnny, are stupendous folks and attentive to any questions or concerns you might have. The neighbors are wonderful too. Whether you are simply interested in as much beach time as possible or if you’re more intrepid and want to explore this diverse island, it’s all easily done from Puako with day trips to take in all the fun stuff to see and do here on Big Island.

We had a great time at Puako Pau Hana. It was very clean and had all the amenities we could need. The house was a 5 minute walk to fantastic snorkeling and across the street from beautiful sunsets. It was away from the crowds, which meant some effort to get to restaurants, but we were fine with that as we just wanted a nice, beautiful place to stay. And it was possible to walk to the restaurants at the Fairmont - only about 15-20 minute walk. Jan was super nice and helpful. We had a great time and would stay there again.

We had the most amazing vacation staying at this property in Puako. We have been to the Big Island many times but staying here was magical for us. The size of the property was perfect for our family of four with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. We loved the location across the street from endless tide pools, countless turtles, and beautiful sunsets. We loved the peacefulness we encountered, especially listening to the birds in the morning. There was a true neighborhood feel, and Jan and Johnny were such gracious hosts, leaving the lights on when we arrived late, sharing fruit from their yard, and even dropping off homemade lemonade on a hot afternoon. While we were surprised by the lack of a stove and oven, there was an abundance of cooking supplies including induction cooktops that allowed us to eat most of our meals at the property. This is truly a spectacular location and property; it was the perfect spot to start and end our many adventures in the Big Island including proximity to some of the most beautiful beaches.

Jan’s and Johnny’s rental home is located in a convenient area for beaches, groceries, activities, and shopping. After a day, or evening, of visiting beaches, parks, or activities (we had 3 days of wedding activities), coming ‘home’ to the rental was very relaxing. The house has everything you need, and if you cannot find something, all you have to do is contact the owners. Jan responded ASAP with any questions I had. At the end of the day, you must walk across the street for the amazing sunset and sea turtle watching. One night, we saw no less than a dozen sea turtles. When you arrive, make sure you browse the local guide in the living-room. It provides information for everything you need. I can go on and on about the comforts of the rental home. If you want to feel like you are home while on vacation, I suggest you rent from Jan and Johnny in Puako.
