These two semi-detached holiday cottages are situated 0.5 miles up a private farm track, next to the owners’ small working farm in a tranquil, peaceful location, ideal for secluded retreats or as a central touring base to explore Dumfries & Galloway. The cottages are similar in style, Rose Cottage (ref 28176) being a converted traditional granite byre with an architect-designed larch-clad extension.

They are located near the Solway Coast, close to the world-class ‘7 Stanes’ mountain bike facilities at Dalbeattie and Mabie Forest (also ideal for walking). In the vicinity is Galloway Forest Park, one of a few ‘Dark Sky Parks’ in the western world, recognised for the spectacular starry skies it affords. Dumfries, 25 minutes away, is recognised for links with Robert Burns; visitors may explore his house, sample a dram in Burns’ favourite hostelry - The Globe Inn, or visit the Robert Burns Centre. Other nearby activities include Golf, Fishing, Segway experiences, Bike hire and Canyoning.

Discover unspoilt villages, dramatic coastlines, sandy beaches and rocky coves, with gorgeous views across the Solway Firth to the Lakeland Fells. Local history includes castles, abbeys, historic ruins and neolithic chambered tombs. For artistic interests, the co-owner, Mark Welland, displays some of his artwork on site, being happy to show and discuss his art with guests. Close by, Kirkcudbright (known as the area’s art town), has galleries, museums, cafés, a distillery and a planetarium. Good food and drink can be found in a variety of excellent local farm shops, distilleries, breweries, pubs, cafés and restaurants, approximately 6 miles.

Wildlife is abundant here, with RSPB Mersehead Nature Reserve nearby and Whitecroft Farm having wild roe deer, hare, badgers, bats and numerous birdlife, e.g. red kites and nesting Barn Owls. The owners are happy for guests to meet the farm animals and join in with feeding, including our 2 Highland ’Coos’, tame sheep, or even take our Blacknose Swiss Valais sheep for a wee walk! Whilst ideal for Spring/Summer holidays, the cottages are perfect for cosy Autumn/Winter breaks, great for stargazing and cosying up around the fire.

Hilary and Mark have provided an excellent holiday getaway hideout. We were there 2 weeks and did day trips every day except when an Atlantic storm came to visit. On that day we were able to sit in the comfort and safety of Rose's solid stone walls which have stood the test of time and the also comforting wood fire. Modern conveniences kept up entertained and up to date as the WiFi and Sat TV worked well. Kitchen is well equipped and spacious. Many good meals were prepared with yummy local foods and treats. The area is remote but Hilary and Mark are a font of knowledge as to were to go for a variety of tastes, thirsts, history, books, nature and all round fun times. The local farm store is excellent for a meal or to stock up on essential and artisan foods/goods. Dalbeattie is relatively close as is Threave Garden and house. The only warning we'd give is to be careful with the super powerful heating system; most days we left it off as once heated, the rooms remain too warm especially if you enjoy a comfortable log fire as we do. Thank you H and M for a restful and also fun filled holiday.

Beautiful well equipped cottage, warm, cosy and comfortable in the cold weather of autumn. Very helpful owner supplying a lovely welcome basket with a difference, oat cakes, biscuits, jam, taramasalata and ginger beer ! The views to the front of the cottage are great, hubby took great interest in the cattle that came and went from this field. Although there were no shops locally there is a good selection in Dalbeattie some 4 miles away. As well as very beautiful walks the area has other attractions including NT properties within 20 miles or so. The place was so peaceful, could have stayed forever !
