About this cabin rental
Wilderness Jacal is located within the only twenty mile long gated box canyon in the Chama Wilderness. The rental includes one large room with kitchen, dining area, and queen size bed. There is a large covered porch with two twin beds, BBQ, table, chairs.
The rental is located on the site of an early 1900s Northern New Mexico homestead landmark and is one of three vacation rentals we have in the canyon, with Ranch Wilderness Casita and Anasazi Wilderness Glamping Cabin.
Gallina Canyon Ranch has been featured in many national and regional magazines, including New Mexico magazine, The Santa Fean, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, and Martha Stewart Living.
● We provide fresh drinking water from our spring: two 5-gallon containers. There is also fresh rain water in the 1,600 gallon cistern.
● A picturesque kitchen and dining area.
● A three-burner propane stove. Do not use inside stove for frying food; use outside stove only with provided cast iron skillet.
● A medium size refrigerator - freezer that makes ice.
● Dish soap and paper towels.
● Melitta Pour-Over Coffeemaker.
● Kerosene lamp.
● A large outside deck.
● A propane barbecue grill.
● A 4-gallon solar shower bag, liquid bath soap.
● An outhouse, with toilet paper.

Due to the 14 crossings of Rio Gallina required to get to Wilderness Jacal, we take all visitors regardless of what type of vehicle they have, and their provisions in our truck. We will return you to the main ranch and your vehicle at the end of your stay.
Wilderness Jacal Policies:
● We require a signed waiver from each person when you arrive. Please read the waiver before booking the rental.
● Camp fires and smoking are prohibited in the canyon.
● No hunting.
● Dogs are not allowed on the bed. Please let us know before you arrive that you are bringing a dog.
● Wilderness Jacal is closed for check in at 3 pm do not arrive after this time.
● Check-out time is 11 AM to 2:00 PM.
Other details:
● The kitchen contains salt, pepper, sugar, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, tea, and various seasonings. Prior to your arrival you will wish to shop for all of your food, drink, and snacks for your entire stay.
● You might wish to bring water shoes. It is possible for Rio Gallina to flash flood: do not attempt to cross in times of flooding.
● You may wish to bring slippers to wear inside Wilderness Jacal, as the floor is tiled. We also suggest that you bring head lamps if you want to read at night.

Our cancellation policy: More than 60 days prior to check in: 100% refund. 60 days to 30: 100% minus $25 cancel fee. Less than 30 days of check in: no refund. I was supposed to stay at this property, however rains came through and made that not possible. The hosts were very communicative and offered me the option of staying at another property nearby.
The location is hands down one of the most beautiful areas I’ve been to. This kind of place isn’t for everyone, it’s like camping but with many great amenities like a refrigerator, stove, and warm water shower.
I would love to visit again next year! I can’t say enough wonderful things about the property and the hosts, perfection!

We wanted a special weekend for our 37th anniversary and found it. Although this place may not be for everybody (no electricity or hot running water and an outhouse. It was spectacularly quiet and serene. We were able to hike with our dog all day through the canyon and the stars and Milky Way in the night sky were spectacular. The hosts were incredible. We indicated that it was our anniversary and had a bottle of Gruet champagne with chilled flutes in the refrigerator and were given 18 fresh eggs from their chickens. We were told to bring flashlights if we wanted to read at night. We like playing Scrabble after dinner and were able to get enough light using the oil lantern and our LED light for an enjoyable time. By the way our dog loved it.

My husband and I went for my birthday and it was the perfect romantic get-away and completely off the grid. Andrew dropped us off on Saturday afternoon, and we didn't see another person (besides each other) until the following Saturday when he returned to take us out. I read 4 books, cover to cover, and slept whenever I wanted. We would hike in the morning, when it was cool and read (or sleep) in the toasty afternoons. On our second attempt, we made it to the Indian ruins (of the mysterious Gallina people) at the top of the western ridge and sat in the shade of the tumbled tower, watching the clouds and drinking in the breeze. It was magical.
The Casita is rustic and comfortable, though it gets warm in the afternoons and evenings - best to stay out on the porch with the breeze, at least in July. The bed is comfy- not too hard, not too soft; the sheets are clean and crisp. The outdoor shower was exhilarating - I'd forgotten how sensual it is to stand naked in the outdoors - and No. 2 was far enough away that it didn't assault your nose at the cabin, but close enough that you could make it there in time even if you'd been holding your pee all night b/c you might be afraid of the dark, ahem.
We saw lots of tracks of the critters that live in the canyon, heard coyotes howling, and shared our salad with the bunnies that live under the porch. We had one encounter with a rattlesnake hiking, very far from the Casita, but we all went our separate ways with no harm done. One night, there was a rock slide somewhere on the south canyon and the sound it made echoed all through the canyon.
And the stars! There were so many they lit up the sky, even without the moon. I never got tired of listening to the absence of cars, and people. Although an occasional plane passed over the canyon, there was no other human-made sounds the entire week. The cicadas; the wind in the trees, the birds, the cows early in the morning and in the evening - that was the "racket" that assaulted us. On our last night there, it stormed with lots of thunder and lightening, wind and rain, and when we got up the next morning, the smell of sage was like perfume in the air. It was wonderful. My only upgrade would be Tabasco!
If you need a break; if you've forgotten what it's like to be a human in a natural place, w/out electronics and gadgets or even a clock - go here. I want to go back again in the spring or the fall but I will never forget it. Thanks Andrew and Elizabeth!

We love this cabin deep in the heart of the Chama Wilderness. The eggs from the ranch's hens are beyond excellent. The bed is firm and comfortable, and Elizabeth thought of everything we might wish to have in the cabin. We will return next year.
