About this cottage rental

Situated on the side of a hill and surrounded by forests and mountains, Le Lunghe offers the perfect retreat for couples or small families seeking tranquillity and the beauty of the countryside. The cottage is set within a mature, well-maintained garden, cared for by the friendly owner, Giancarlo. At the side of the two-bedroom cottage, a lovely covered veranda provides stunning views over the Serchio Valley and the surrounding hills, offering an ideal spot to relax. The front of the house faces the village, just a few minutes' walk away, as well as the impressive Apuan Mountain range.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Le Lunghe is perfectly situated near various hiking routes, making it an ideal location for hillwalkers. During the summer months, the local village hosts two vibrant festivals. The Medieval Festival features a historical re-enactment and additionally, the Food and Wine Tour to the Rocca di Sassi, showcasing the area's culinary and cultural heritage, is a highlight for visitors.

On the lawn, a 3.5-meter diameter, 90cm deep lightweight swimming pool offers a refreshing place to cool off, while a paved terrace and shaded dining area complete the outdoor space.
The cottage has been carefully restored and extended to preserve its charm. The ground floor features a fully equipped dining kitchen made from reclaimed chestnut wood, complete with an original stone fireplace and wood-burning stove. The living room offers a comfortable sofa, TV, stereo, and a selection of books, and leads out to the covered veranda. A large bathroom with a shower and washing machine completes this level. Upstairs, there are two double bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with twin beds or a double, providing flexibility for guests.

Le Lunghe’s serene setting is perfect for those seeking peace and solitude, yet it is just a few minutes' walk to the medieval village of Sassi, where you'll find an excellent restaurant and a small shop. A newly completed road allows for easy access to the nearby market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, now only a 10-minute drive away. Castelnuovo offers a variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, and a vibrant weekly market.

The town is also home to a train station providing convenient links to Lucca and beyond. By car, you can reach Lucca in 50 minutes, Pisa and its airport in 1.5 hours, Florence in 2 hours, and the stunning coastal villages of Cinque Terre in 2.5 hours. For a beach day, the nearest sandy shore is just over an hour away.

Le Lunghe beat all imaginable expectations: the house is wonderfully functional with dishwasher, washer and dryer and everything else you would need for a perfect stay. I can't even begin to describe the view from the property, it's simply amazing and we had it all to ourselves. The peace and quiet of the area was beyond expectation, we spent a whole month there and couldn't be happier. Giancarlo not only checked in on us to make sure everything was perfect, he became our family in that short time. We will miss Le Lunghe and Giancarlo dearly and will be back next year! Thank you!!!

Very nice. House was simple but charming. Could be a bit cleaner. Last 400 meter road is hard to drive. Garden is fantastic. Three terraces so alwas sun or shadow. View is amazing. Owner is very friendly but speaks only italian. Go there to Relax.

Charming host and cottage in a stunning location. Our host was warm and welcoming and very kind and helpful. The property managers were helpful and was a lovely base to do day trips from. We visited Pisa and Florence within our 1 week stay.

Wonderful, peaceful location, although an interesting drive to and from the property! The house was also very atmospheric with a range of tables with fantastic views of the Garfagnana to eat at and an outdoor barbecue which we made much use of. The restaurant in the nearby village of Sassi (Il Totto) is easily walkable and does one of the most authentic Italian three or four course dining experiences you could wish for. We almost literally rolled back down the hill afterwards. The star turn however is Giancarlo, both for the breakast pastries he generously provided for us and his willingness to drive our luggage up to the road at the end of the week when I was unwilling to risk doing so in the hire car.

I could look at the amazing views forever.
I could look at the amazing views forever.
We chose the property with a wish list in mind: Scenery, tranquility, food, and wine. And we got it all, in spades. We had most meals under the rustic lean-to because we could look at the hills and mountains to the west, north and east. The garden is beautifully kept. There were trees with apples, pears, figs, olives and Giancarlo has a tomato vine which he encouraged us to pick. I mean, we are talking real, big, funny-shaped proper tomatoes. Delicious. As if that wasn't enough there were large rosemary bushes that went on the chicken on the BBQ and a sage that found its way into the vitello escallops we fried. Marsala wine at under 5 euros a bottle made it for an amateur's saltimbocca. Giancarlo, the host who lives next door (I use the term next door loosely) is a great fellow. Often checked to see we were ok but not in the least intrusive. The house is a restored farmhouse and all the plumbing, electrics, water, gas etc is bang up to date. TV is good and the wi-fi is excellent Shopping is easy in the huge Conad supermarket down the hill in Gallicano. The local restaurant, Il Totto, we went to four times in the week. They don't run a menu, just what they have fresh on the day. I had the best ever sliced steak in oil and balsamic sauce and we still savour the home-made ravioli with spinach and ricotta. The track down to the house is interesting but totally do-able. Our hire car, a humble 1.2litre Lancia which I dubbed "entrail-free" (gutless) made it up and down every day. In many ways this review doesn't do justice to the property. That's because it is so hard to describe serenity and mountain views. We were totally smitten by the variety of wildlife: goats, deer, friendly lizards, butterflies. In the evenings we liked to hear the owls call to each other and the sound of crickets after the sun went down.
