Staying here feels like being part of the family and culture. Something I did not expect to encounter to be honest.

One has to get ready for mosquitoes because your staying at a countryside in the forest, although you are provided with a mosquito net for the bed which works well

I had the most beautiful stay at Weeragiri Homestay, tucked away near Mirissa in a peaceful little place. I came here to experience Avurudu, the Sri Lankan New Year just two days after my birthday, and I truly couldn’t have chosen a better place. Since the celebration falls just two days after my birthday, it felt even more special to be a part of something so meaningful. The Weeragiri family welcomed me with open arms. Bodhi, Chamali, and their 18-year-old son Banu, who was super curious about my GoPro, made me feel instantly at home. The next morning, I woke up at 4:40am to witness the traditional ritual of cooking pot milk rice, a beautiful moment that marks the start of the new year. Later that morning, I joined the family to enjoy the milk rice, followed by a delicious breakfast that broke their festive fast. The food throughout my stay was unforgettable. I tried their homemade fish curry, thick Sri Lankan-style dal, and fresh salads with unique dressings. The house was peaceful, and filled with warmth and kindness. That evening, my friend Tejal joined us for dinner. She was greeted just as warmly and was served a simple but tasty vegetarian meal with cabbage, dal, rice, and salad. I had more of the fish curry, and both of us loved the food. After dinner, the host Bodhi took us on a short walk to a nearby beach that was calm, quiet, and absolutely serene. Spending Avurudu with the Weeragiri family felt like being adopted into a new home. Their generosity, the authentic food, and the peaceful surroundings made this stay incredibly special. It was truly a home away from home, and I’ll always carry these memories with me. Highly recommended to anyone looking to experience Sri Lankan culture in the most genuine way.
