The region
Exmoor is situated in South West Britain, specifically across West Somerset and North Devon. Often referred to as England's best kept secret, Exmoor is a wonderful holiday destination for anyone looking for a holiday in the great outdoors! There's so much to see and do, from short walks to long expeditions across the moors or horse riding, taking in a safari or sight-seeing at your own pace around the 'picture postcard' villages and hamlets.

Porlock Weir has a quaint little harbour and its own unique charm; the port has a long and colourful history. Today Porlock Weir is a quiet harbour and a thriving community that welcomes tourists every year, many of whom come to enjoy the pretty scenery, shops, tea rooms, pubs and local cuisine. On a fine day, the South West Coast Path offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the fabulous views across Porlock Weir and the bay. The coastal footpath links up with many other walking trails including Culbone, home to the smallest church in England. One of the more unusual attractions at Porlock Weir is the submerged forest. At low tide, the remains of ancient tree trunks arise from the grey clay soil. These desiccated stumps are the last remaining evidence of a forest that, once upon a time, lay five miles inland.

Although slightly dated, this property was immaculately clean, comfortable and well equipped, and the views were stunning. The rooms were a good size and the location was fantastic with private direct access to the stony beach and on to the costal path. From there, it's a good hour or so walk to Hurlstone Point and then on to the tiny, pretty village of Bossington, which has a tea shop (open seasonally, so check first). We drove 2 cars to Bossington, left one there , returned to the apartment to leave the second car, and then walked back to Bossington so we could drive out further from there later. We even bought home pressed apple juice from one property and woollen hats (knitted from the Marino wool provided by the angora goats kept at another property) in Bossington. Honesty boxes for both, which was a nice touch. The property is surrounded by countryside, with horses in the paddocks. Everybody we met from the stable hands to the owner, were so friendly and welcoming. Porlock is only a couple of miles drive away and has everything you need, and there are places of interest, like Dunkery Beacon a short drive away. I would highly recommend this lovely place.

The views from the apartment are incredible - sea, fields with horses, woodland and hills. We were lucky as the weather was amazing too. The early morning dog walks on the beach were so relaxing as we were the only ones there. A great base to explore the area too - we loved Lynmouth! The whole family agree that we have never been to a place that was so good for our wellbeing. Came home refreshed and revived - just what we needed.
