The Wyndham Rio Barra is a fine hotel. It is indeed in Rio de Janeiro, but note that it's in Barra, a developed and pleasant residential area within city limits that is 15 km away from the heat and hustle you think of in Rio. The hotel is sunny and spacious, and they've wisely spent money on the presentation, from the stolid entryway to the bright and exciting foyer and lobby. The pool is sublime, and the rooms have balconies ... most offer a view of something, whether the ocean, the pool, the mountains on the horizon ....
The breakfast is functional but not elaborate.
This is a fine place to stay, and I was happy to get a good, last-minute rate in an extended size room. It's not luxury, but it's a great base to enjoy the sand and surf of the Rio area.

Generally speaking, the hotel staff were very friendly and efficient and the hotel facilities were OK, not the room facilities. My room, was totally worn out and up for renovation.
The couch was stained and the cushions had lived their lives.
Sparkles came out of the power outlets when you plugged in.
There was not one single glass or cup in the room. I went down to ask if it was an omission. The answer was no. I got two plastic cups from the reception desk. No plates, no cutlery, nothing of that kind although there was a micro-wave and an electric kettle in the room. I was amazed that there were TWO rolls of toilet paper.
Worst of all, I noticed two attempts from strangers to find out if there was someone in the room. I warned security.
