Our camping plans fell through so we rented last minute. The only room available was a double room. It was very expensive and I'm glad we weren't sharing it with anyone else.
This place is very old. The floors (your ceiling) are wood. Every footstep is amplified. The walls are paper thin. The windows are single pane and drafty. You will hear the neighborhood children playing outside the same whether the windows are open or closed. You will hear every sound inside the hotel and outside the hotel, down to a pin dropping on the opposite side of the hotel. The door hinges are all painted over and they all squeak obnoxiously. Everything creaks. Every door closing is thunderous.
The lobby is very impressive and we spent most of our stay reading on one of the couches. We saw very few other guests and really enjoyed the common area. Free coffee and tea is a plus. The staff very friendly.
The guest rooms themselves are tiny and minimalist and not an enjoyable environment, however the bed was very comfortable (memory foam with a nice heavy blanket). The pillow didn't work for me.
The shower was ancient. It was a curtain inside a standing tub. The water pressure was good enough and the water temperature good.
The town itself is extremely depressing. It's a pop up town centered around a still operating logging operation that bels out a low hum, steam and a pleasant aroma of fresh cut redwood. The town is dead. The children have nothing to do but ride gas powered dirtbikes in the woods and get up to mischief around town. I saw only children in the town. I rarely encountered an adult.
Hobies market and deli across the street from the hotel was convenient. Decent sandwiches. The location of the hotel is 20 minutes drive from Avenue of the Giants and 20 minutes drive from Eel River Brewing Co, so convenient in that regard.
If you want to experience what it was like to stay in an old lodge 100 years ago then this is your place. Otherwise save your money and stay in a motel. It will be quieter.
