Domus Sessoriana

First off I want to start by saying I rarely leave a review, let alone a negative one. But I feel like I should write this to warn people who want to stay at the Domus Sessoriana. First the room, the airconditioning is constantly tuned to 16 degrees Celsius. You are not allowed to touch the controls, only to switch it on or off. So most nights were spent chilly even though it was 35 degrees outside. Our shower did not have a complete door, which resulted in a very wet and slippery floor every time we showered. There were also ants everywhere in the complex, including the room, and the bed. There is not a “do not disturb” sign in the room, so you cannot let cleaning know you wouldn’t want to be disturbed. We were in the room at 4.30PM when cleaning knocked, I said the room was occupied. But the cleaning did not stop knocking until I opened the door. This is not nice if you want to have a little nap in the afternoon. Then another odd thing, you need to give your key to the check in desk every time you leave the building. The desk is manned 24/7, but the hotel has signage which indicate that they are not responsible for any stolen goods in the room. Whilst they are the only ones with the key. The breakfast cannot be called a breakfast, there is no buffet, you need to ask a service lady (who does not speak English) what you’d like from the buffet. We never went again after our first breakfast, the food was horrendous. Now the tourist tax, they are obliged by the city of Rome to tax every individual tourist €6 per night. In our case for 7 nights 84 euros. Many hotels include this in their nightly price since this is a very unexpected charge. They did not warn about the tourist tax on the listing. This is quite an unwelcome surprise which should be included in the nightly fare. So the cheap nightly rate is not as cheap as you think. The positives were that the airconditioning did work even if it was extremely cold in the room. The building has a historic feel. And the staff was kind in general. Overall I would not recommend staying here, I would rather spend more for decent accommodation.

Had the best time. Clean central hotel

Staying here is a little different from your typical hotel experience. The building was once a monastery, and it still retains much of that historic character, giving the whole place a wonderfully atmospheric and enchanting feel. The long, high-ceilinged corridors and spacious rooms really add to the sense of history. The rooms themselves are very generous in size, although the décor and furnishings could benefit from some modernisation. It’s also wonderfully peaceful and quiet, while still being well connected to the city centre. A charming and unusual place to stay, particularly if you appreciate accommodation with a bit of history and character.
