About this house rental
Hinoki House was designed and built by master craftsman Thamby Kumaran, his mentor Ichikawa Kihei, and Michael Singer. Traditional post-and-beam Japanese craftsmanship is combined with classic California design sensibilities to create light-filled rooms and a strong sense of form and materiality. This unique property sits on a wild meadow, bounded on two sides by cypress hedgerows and within reach of the Pacific Ocean. Whether you are looking for quiet relaxation or a bit of outdoor adventure, the property and location offer both. From your front door stroll less than 1/2 mile to Point Cabrillo State Park which includes the historic 1909 Light Station (30.5 acres), approximately 270 acres of undeveloped coastal bluffs, prairie, and numerous coves, including Frolic Cove, the site of the
Hinoki House's peaceful setting is the perfect retreat from the hustle of modern life. With its old-world craftsman architecture, zen shoji screens, and natural setting it is truly a tranquil escape. The Primary queen has its own full bathroom upstairs, and downstairs is a double bedroom with its own full bathroom.
Although Hinoki House is pet friendly, please note that it is limited to dogs only with a maximum number of no more than 2.

Our family of 4 ( dog) enjoyed a wonderful stay at Hinoki House and hope to come back again. The Japanese-style craftsmanship was striking, and the open spaces and thoughtful balance of ambient and internal lighting added just the right amount of warmth. The house was very clean and well-maintained. We enjoyed a welcome sense of solitude amidst the large property, feeling as if we were in a coastal forest retreat.

Hinoki House exudes calm in the house and the surrounding area. We had a wonderful week here. Everything you need is provided. The walk to the lighthouse is a morning must do. We would definitely return although it is a trek for us to get here

Architectural Gem but somewhat outdated after 50 years. Unfortunately my son and I had major allergy issues with the dust and dust mites from the home's central air conditioning and heating system. Would strongly recommend rigorous duct cleaning and filter changes. Might need new A/C system

Place was amazing, an incredible find! My only complaint is that appliances (heater, dishwasher) are super noisy, my wife literally woke up thinking there was something wrong with the house. But that is very minor compared to everything this place gets right.

This was our 4th stay at Hinoki house and it never disappoints. It is truly a gem. Well maintained and clean. Sorry to see some of the older plantings around the deck and foyer dying off due to gophers. Will definitely come back again.

What an amazing house! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodations were comfy, the house is thoughtfully appointed with everything we needed. The property is very beautiful, and we got to see some cool wildlife (turkeys, deer, birds). We found a trail to Frolic Cove within walking distance of the house that led to a beautiful, secluded beach and waterfall! The house is within close proximity to the glass beach and some great restaurants. We would definitely choose the Hinoki House again if we find ourselves on the Northern California coast again. Thanks!!

We selected this house for rental due to its unique style. It did not disappoint as the construction and look was very interesting. We enjoyed our stay and the close walk to the beach overlook in the neighborhood to watch the sunset was an added bonus. The rental was not stocked as well as we typically get at this price point and is showing its age.

The unit and location were great. We were not sure what to do with the trash (we left it in the garage next to some garbage pails). We couldn't figure out how to turn off the oven (silly us) and had to have a chat with an online person to figure that out. It took some guessing to figure out how to use the TV (age? lack of experience with cable?). However, hearing and seeing and walking to the ocean was enjoyable.

The Hinoki House was everything we hoped for and more. The property is absolutely beautiful and offers a unique tranquility and peacefulness that we hadn't experienced in any other rental before. The management team and cleaning crew went above and beyond to make us comfortable and included some thoughtful touches throughout the house that made us feel extraordinarily welcome, i.e. the New Years confetti popper, the dog toy in the basket and the towel swans! Wow! It made such a difference to us, thank you so much. The check-in process was seamless and the management team was excellent in their communication with us. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible! Thank you, Mendocino Preferred!

We loved our stay at Hinoki House. We'd definitely stay there again. It was serene and calming, yet just a hop and skip from downtown Mendo. Having traveled to japan, I loved being in the artisan created home. . . . . . my only negatives would be the bathrooms. . . probably ok for the 70's when house was built, but could definitely benefit from a renovation. also, the kitchen is snug, but adequate.

Beautiful custom home with Japanese historical roots in the 1970s. Queit, relaxing and within hearing distance of the pacific and sea lions chatter.

We three, wife, college aged son, and I spent Monday through Friday in tis very Japanese style house. On reading the history we find it was hand built by a young couple and some Japanese craftsmen friends of theirs.
We had a really nice time just veging out or taking walks to and along the cliffs. Short drives to Mendocino and Fort Bragg allowed us to walk the trails there as well.
The sea lions were audible from the house and there were deer passing by every day. A healthy looking coyote and a grey fox walked across the meadow by the house on separate days.
We highly recommend taking some time to stay and relax here.

A fabulous getaway home on the north coast for those into Japanese esthetics. Spare and elegant, albeit weathered, the house exudes personality in a quiet, unobtrusive way. If you are not enamored of Japanese style you might find it a bit stark (no nicknacks or homey decorations) but we loved it. Very private, peaceful location, a short walk to the ocean, a short drive to Mendocino or Fort Bragg. Interior was spotless, fully-equipped kitchen (could use a wok) but bring your own cooking oil and condiments, two wood-burning stoves make it warm and cozy. The management had an unusual communication style, downloaded an app onto my phone without my knowledge -- didn't know they could do that, not sure I like it. Otherwise, all was smooth sailing. This was a 20th anniversary celebration for us, just perfect for our taste. Highly recommended.

WE are returning guests. Sadly we found the place upon arrival with dirty dishes and areas which is creepy knowing you're sharing this with strangers. Needs a good going through for broken things as well that people aren't reporting. Bat guano at front entry could use to be cleaned up , otherwise we like and appreciate bats. We left the place cleaner than we found it.We love the girls in the office, easy going with good communication skills. The new bathroom fixtures were a great change. It was necessary to wipe the sand and dirt out of the dryer before using it, empty the lint collector and clean the tops of both washer and dryer of filth .Not certain if the dryer door pops open during it's cycle ,it seems it doesn't latch securely- I didn't stand around to watch and only did one load.

Overall we enjoyed our stay very much. There were a few items that would have made the stay even better.
1. Closet light did not work.
2. Hardly any silverware.
3. LIght switch in dining room barely functional.

Hinoki house is absolutely beautiful -- well-maintained, and well-located closed to Point Cabrillo, and ten minutes from downtown Mendocino. The airy and light feeling of the space made for a refreshing and quiet getaway.

What a treat to be able to stay in this home! We loved the high quality craftsmanship, the location in the trees, and the peace this home radiated. We wish we could have stayed longer and plan to return. The area is one of our favorites on the CA coast. The home is close to beaches, parks, the lighthouse, and the shops and restaurants in the nearby town of Mendocino.

Power went out when we arrived. Came on for a while and the out again leaving us in total darkness up three flights of stairs with no flashlights, emergency lights or backup generator. Called for assistance and was repeatedly hung up on. Next morning went to the rental office and were called liars by a very unpleasant young woman when describing the lack of any backup lighting. She gave us two rechargeable lights and swore she knew they were in the residence. Went back and checked every drawer, outlet etc. finding what we already knew to be true, no backup lighting. At this point, not wanting to spend another night in darkness and thoroughly disgusted with the attitude of the staff, we turned in the keys and went home. Two days later we came down with the H1N1 flu and are now fighting it's symptoms. As stated, the Vacation From ****.. Perhaps you could use the $ 500 fee for the night we didn't stay towards a backup generator like all the homes around us had and save someone else the trouble. Would also recommend better cleaning.

Beautiful House and Location
Beautiful House and Location
We enjoyed our stay at Hinoki House. The location allows for a walk to the lighthouse along the bluffs above the shore, and easy access to the small beach just to the North. Overall it was well provisioned, but we found the requirement to not run the dishwasher when not in the house odd and somewhat burdensome, as well as the need to put all the dishes away before leaving. It worked out okay with four of us chipping in. A bit more dusting and web removal of the open beams is in order, but overall the house was clean and comfortable. Nice for a unique place to stay in a lovely environment.

This is by far our favorite rental. We chose the Hinoki House to experience the Japanese architecture, which was authentic and wonderful, but we will be coming back because, in addition, the location is ideal, the beds were comfortable, and it was clean. Our trip to The Hinoke House was great. The house was conveniently located between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We walked daily to the ocean. The Cabrillo Lighthouse was a nice short hike from the house. The house was spacious and the bed was comfortable. The heater was finicky and a challenge to regulate. Since it was a little rainy and cold we liked the wood stove and the cozy fire. We could have used a few more dishes and flatware so we didn’t have to run the dishwasher so often. We go to the Mendocino coast for the ocean. There are so many great beaches and parks like Caspar Beach, Jughandle and Russian Gulch. We would definitely rent from Mendocino Preferred Vacation Rentals again. Everyone I talked to there was friendly and helpful.
