Murren is a cosy mountain village situated at 1650m at the foot of the ski mountain Schilthorn 2970m on a ridge of a 800m cliff drop above the Lauterbrunnen valley right across of the impressive Jungfrau massive. Murren is by many referred to as the most beautiful ski resort in the world. The village is car free and only reached by cable car/train. The cable car that leaves from Lauterbrunnen is reached by car from International airports in Bern (1 hour) Zurich, Basel and Geneva in approximate (2 hours) or by train in just over 3 hours.
Murren ski area is connected to two other ski resorts in Berner Oberland, Wengen and Grindelwald. Together they form the ski area Jungfrau that includes 44 lifts, 213km of pist with 98 different trails including the most famous one - The Lauberhorn Rennen in Wengen, the Alpine World Cup's longest downhill race.
Murren is the birthplace of alpine skiing. It was here ski tourism was born in the early 1900s and the first competition in slalom was arranged here in 1922. Since then Murren is one of the few exclusive ski resorts that has arranged Alpine World Championship twice, the first one in the history was 1931.
The relative few number of hotels and tourist beds in Murren versus the size of the lift system is unusual in the Alps and results in a laid back and relaxing atmosphere without any queuing at the lifts.
There is plenty of space on the pistes and the powder stays untouched for day's.
In Murren you get the feeling that the industrial ski tourism is far away, it's a place where you get to experience how skiing used to be in the past when a ski holiday meant a time to relax and enjoy nature. Your stay in Murren will be a return to the roots, the luxury of taking things slowly with a taste for beauty.
During the summer months, Murren is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday with a stay in Chalet Sofia being something truly special.
Chalet Sofia has many charming outside spaces where you can enjoy the long sun-filled days, basking in the outdoor hot-tub appreciating the sensational views of the snow capped mountains.
Murren provides you with the perfect backdrop to a wealth of activities, events, adventures and escapes. As you would expect in the mountains, there are fablous and extensive hikes to discover, from all day hikes to shorter excursions. There are many mountain bike trails to explore and for the more adventures there is a spectacular Via Ferrata. Great conditions to do Tandem Paragliding down into the beautiful Lauterbrunnen valley, there truly is something for everyone. Many of the great mountain restaurants are also open during the summer months. The Sports centre in the village is open all year around with a swimming pool, gym and Spa. In the winter they also keep an ice rink for skating, ice hockey and curling. In the summer that turns into a football field with synthetic grass.
The Lauterbrunnen valley with its steep sides and many waterfalls ( 72 to be exact) has been the inspiration for the author J.R.R Tolkien and his Middle Earth's Rivendell in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The beauty of this area in the summer can not be described, it has to be experienced but I leave you a quote from J.J.R. Tolkien " I left the view of the Jungfrau with deep regret: eternal snow, etched as it seems against eternal sunshine, and the Silberhorn sharp against dark blue: the Silvertine ( Celebdil) of my dreams"

Chalet Sofia was a dream. A big beautiful house on the edge of Murren - by Swiss vacation venue standards - a somewhat sleepy car-free town with plenty to do without have to fight hoards of vacationers. The house is beautifully built with several bedrooms, baths, laundry, a well appointed kitchen/great room and decks surrounding the chalet. The home is directly across from the Eiger, Moench, and Jungfrau - a scene you can never tire from. The owner has a manager in town that met us and was available to answer any questions quickly. After a week there, the family had mixed emotions about leaving… we had a great time but wanted to stay longer. This is a real find, hope to return!

Thank you to our hosts for an amazing stay in Murren! The view from the patio was absolutely amazing and is burned into my memory. The truly hand crafted Chalet lived up to its expectations and easily accommodated our family of 9 adults ranging from 21 to 82 years of age.At the end of each day's hiking (just leaving the Chalet added a great hike in and out) the sauna and hot tub were great hits.Thank you again to our wonderful hosts!

The chalet is breathtaking. Great location. Great views. Great host. It exceeded our expectations and we felt grateful to have been able to stay there. There is a grocery store within walking distance and many restaurants.

This is a lovely chalet owned by a lovely family. The owners treated us like friends, gave us great local advice about restaurants, and set up a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations for us. The chalet itself is one of a kind, beautifully built and tasteful with a warm cozy feeling and many separate acoustical spaces so that large families can gather yet also have secluded places for reading or practicing instruments, etc. The views are breathtaking. The feel is one of a lovely family home rather than a typical bland, characterless ski cabin rental. The kitchen is amazingly equipped, the hot tub is perfect temperature, the sauna is lovely. We felt so lucky to have that time there.

Sarah Jane and Peter were amazing hosts at their beautiful property. The views and the comfort of the chalet were the best we have ever had. We felt very at home and feel as if we have made two new good friends! The only regret we had was that we could not stay even longer in magical Mürren!

What an amazing villa in Mürren. My family spent a week here and we had a wonderful time. The villa is beautiful, the views and all the amenities were perfect. The little town itself is wonderful and we were able to cook in one night getting food from the local market. Sarah was an awesome host and we would go back again. Switzerland was amazing!

This house couldn’t have been better for our gatherings of friends and family. We had rotating groups visit us weekly while we pretended to live in Switzerland for a month. The house is just as advertised and was GREAT for us and our guests. Many beautiful hikes on this side of the valley with little or no transportation needed. Hard to peel ourselves away from the views from the porches, but also many restaurants to choose from. Would not improve on anything except the short, steep walk from the road to the house. Looks like surveyors were out so perhaps there will be a solution for a smoother walk up in the near future. Wish we were skiers as the house is well equipped for the winter season with boot warmers and jacuzzi and sauna!

9 family members from the United States spent 5 nights in Chalet Sofia. The owner Sarah-Jane was very helpful and accommodating throughout the entire process. The Chalet is wonderful and the views from the entire home are breathtaking and beautiful. The property manager met us at the train station and helped us transport all the luggage up the hill to the Chalet and stayed to ensure everything worked properly and that we had everything we needed. He called us several times throughout the week to see if we had any questions or concerns. The chalet was a wonderful base for our daily adventures and it provided an amazing backdrop for the wedding pictures for our daughter and son-in-laws vow renewal. Sarah-Jane thank you for sharing this amazing location with us for being such a kind and caring host.
