Monterotondo Marittimo is a hidden gem. Perfect for an autumn or winter getaway. (The whole region has access to geothermal heating, so Giada’s beautiful house is very warm.) If you like Tuscan vineyards, olive groves, medieval villages etc, you can find them easily a short drive in any direction from Monterotondo.
What you can’t find in many other places is Le Biancane - the geothermal park. This sounds very unromantic, but it inspired Dante’s vision of the gates of hell - incredible landscape breathing steam, surrounded by beautiful cork oak forests and heathlands. A short but picturesque hike through the woods and fumaroles into Sasso Pisano will get you craft beer and geothermal baths.
Monterotondo itself has only 800 people. There are very few places to stay, so it can’t be over-run by tourists. You can take a morning coffee and cornetto at the local bar in the main square, where everyone will say buongiorno to you. Would also recommend taking a morning cuppa or evening drink to the lookout to watch sunrise or sunset.
There are only a few places to eat, the food is excellent, and the company even better. You might find local live music on the weekend at Enoteca degli Eretici.
If you want a luxury destination with lots of famous Instagram shots, don’t come here. If you want a genuine welcome, beautiful walks, and the chance to explore Tuscany at your own pace, Monterotondo is a very special place.
Now, to Giada’s home - it’s a typical Tuscan home, a beautiful old building well-modernised. Very comfortable, decently equipped, with lots of sweet and thoughtful touches. Giada is a generous host, easy to contact, full of advice, and genuinely wanting you to have the best stay possible.
Be aware it’s a very old town with narrow streets so if you’re hiring a car, decline any upgrades to bigger vehicles they might offer you.
