Relais & Châteaux Bülow Palais

We had an incredible stay while visiting gorgeous Dresden at the Bulow Hotel. Before I discuss any specifics, I’d like to mention the front desk staff. They were INCREDIBLE and as far as I’m concerned, the MAIN reason the ratings at this hotel are so high. Upon checking in, we were warmly greeted and offered a lovely glass of cremant in the beautiful hotel lobby. An extraordinary woman, “Uli”, brought us a city map and gave us a thorough orientation to the city and all of the brilliant places to visit during our stay. Uli was a true historian and passionate ambassador for her city (where she was born and raised). She saved us so much time trying to figure out things on our own. We followed her suggestions the following two days and truly saw all of the main attractions we wished to see. I cannot tell you what a positive impression this made on us. Uli is a huge credit to the Bulow hotel group. 5-stars for this wonderful and beautiful young woman. The hotel is perfectly located, straddling the Newstadt and Old Town. We loved staying at a hotel where locals live and hang out, but just a short walk to all of the grandeur of Old Town. There were so many amazing restaurants nearby and we had many delicious meals (L’Osteria was our favorite). Our room (a junior suite) was beautiful and very roomy. We would gently like to suggest that the housekeeping department needs better training to stay in line with a five-star accommodation. Our shower had significant mildew (once we discreetly notified the front desk they took care of it immediately). We also repeatedly had dirty glasses left in the room, bathrobes were not re-hung, and old napkins were left in the room. In fact, it appeared almost no cleaning was done each day, save for a slight refolding of our duvets on the bed. Sheets and towels were often not replaced and the same tiny bar of soap kept getting moved between the shower and bathroom sinks.

Housekeeping issues were a huge disappointment. Coffee policy (3 pods for our entire stay) Mattresses have seen better days

The style of the interior is a little out-dated

Dinner in the Carousel was disappointing. The monkfish was very bland, and the wine pairings were OK but not great.

Friendly and accommodating front desk staff. Nicely appointed small single room with bath (as I’d booked). Perfect location for me, 7 minute walk to Dresden Neustadt station and 15 minutes walk to the center. Neustadt feels like an area where locals live, quite a few restaurants and services but no tourist shops.

My first night the hotel was evacuated at 2:30 am due to a “technical fault” in the alarm system (so said the automated announcement). After spending close to an hour in a park and then the lobby, we were allowed to return to our rooms. 30-45 minutes later the alarm rang again - fortunately there apparently never was a fire. What bothered me was that this incident was never acknowledged by hotel management, leaving guests wondering they knew or cared or thought the malfunction of their equipment is just normal operation. Especially for a Relais & Chateaux property, which claims comfort and service as a hallmark, this was disappointing.
