Quinta São José - Museu do Triciclo

We stayed in A Cabana, a small but modern, well insulated, very clean and well appointed stone cabin directly facing the river. It had a little terrace were we could enjoy breakfast and dinner listening to the relaxing sounds of nature while our dogs played nearby (it's very dog friendly). The Quinta is located in a remote piece of land with a vineyard and an olive tree field with a handful of cottages 10min drive from Mesao Frio, where you'll find a couple of cafes, restaurants and a supermarket. There doesn't seem to be a physical reception and all communication with the Host was via Whatsapp, which we found a little strange at first but they were very responsive. There was no sight of any staff on the ground except from when someone checked out of their cabin which, again, we found a little strange to start with, but in the end it meant that you felt like you had the whole place to yourself. We liked the small pool near the river as it was right in the middle of the forest and the bigger pool had lovely views of the village. The restaurant at the top was a good option for lunch or dinner (closed on Mondays) and they had a set menu of EUR12 which was fairly decent. All in all we enjoyed our time there, we understand that their intention is to allow the guests to feel like they are left alone to immerse themselves in nature by not having staff around but it definitely felt like it needed a fair bit of TLC with the help of gardeners and mantainance staff.

There was no wifi and no options for breakfast at the Quinta, which we got used to it after the first day but we still feel like it would have been a welcome bonus to have. Once you spend a couple days there you understand that it's a place to totally disconnect from the outside world and fully inmerse yourself in nature, it felt more like an AirBnB or glamping experience than a stay at a hosted quinta. It would have been nice to have a welcome booklet with recommendations on where to eat and shop in town as there were no facilities nearby the Quinta and we had to specifically ask the Host or look it up ourselves. The vineyard and olive tree grounds were rather unkept, with plenty of overgrown weeds, some plastic residue, fallen signs, plantpots filled with dead plants and random objects scattered around in some areas. The pool areas were nice but there didn't seem to be proper pool maintainance and some of the sun loungers were torn. The thing we liked the least is that there was no privacy AT ALL using the toilet in our cabin as it was one big open plan space with the bedroom and living room
