New Hoshiba

The place is large and very close to shuttle stop going to town and the bus heading to train station. Host is very sweet and drove us to the slopes each morning.

The place was beautiful and clean, an incredibly cosy and spacious place to come back to after a day of skiing. Yumi was an absolutely incredible host and made our stay so memorable.

Yumi is a warm, welcoming host. The guest house at New Hoshiba was located just across the street from the main inn; it was comfortable, well-stocked, and fit our group of 6: 3 people upstairs in the loft space on comfortable futons, 3 people in the room downstairs on twin sized beds. I imagine it'd more comfortably fit a family (2 adults, 2-4 kids) Breakfasts were AMAZING and well worth their cost reserving in advance. I've never before been so energized before a day of skiing/snowboarding. Alternatively, there are markets in Iiyama to buy ingredients to cook your own breakfasts and dinners. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you might need to cook with. There is a drying room for all of your ski gear, and it's possible to ship in advance (we used Yamato transport). If staying here, I strongly recommend someone in the group speak at least a little Japanese (Yumi was gracious about my broken, barely serviceable ability to speak. Google translate works in a pinch). There is free laundry in the main inn. Two washing machines and one dryer + one drying room. ありがとうございます、ゆみさん！

Location is important to know ahead of time: it is a ~20 minute walk from Nozawa Onsen town or a 4 minute drive. Parking is limited in the evenings. I personally liked being out of the hustle and bustle, but if you're someone who needs a short walk to the slopes or the town, this is not your spot. Logistics: * Rides are provided to ski - we were personally driven by Yumi, our host. The truck comfortably fits 6 people and gear. (We opted for 7am breakfasts -> 8am ride to the mountain. Rides can be scheduled up through 10am) * After skiing, there is a free shuttle provided by the resort that brings you down from the mountain to a ~4 minute walk away, as the resort's "P3 parking" stop is nearby * If you're interested in driving up to the mountain yourself, there is a parking lot (P1) free on weekdays, a small fee on weekends. We heard you must leave before 6pm or they will assume you're lost and send out search and rescue to find you. Even if that's a tale, please do not keep your car parked beyond 6pm * After 5pm, the hosts at New Hoshiba provide rides to/from the onsen town. Be sure to schedule in advance so they can plan around your schedule. Having our own car made this stay particularly great, and we even went into Iiyama for dinner one night.
