About this cottage rental

We are the proud custodians (kaitiaki) of this iconic 1930s bach from WWII era when there was a surveillance base at the end of our street. Ahu, translated from Maori as 'sacred mound' holds a an incredible location overlooking the ocean horizon all the way to the north. Easy level access straight to the front door perches you on the spot for awesome long sunsets over a glass of wine. Stroll to the Mercer Bay cliffs to catch the green flash at sunset. Check the surf to plan your day or simply turn left or right at the gate and you are on the world-famous Hillary Trail. A 5 minute drive downhill takes you to Piha with shop, eateries, art gallery, and of course the beach. A 5 minute drive in the opposite direction gets you to karekare, a beach made famous in numerous films. Or take a 30 minute downhill track to Karekare Beach and explore remote Whatipu beyond. Ahu is blessed by its location close to the Mercer Bay Loop which leads to Comans Track and Karekare.
Ahu is exposed to big weather so expect wild winds with occasional powercuts. Ahu is also rustic so expect a variety of insects and birds in the immediate environment.

It is not a fancy place, but homey and peaceful with everything we need for a relaxing weekend. The view is stunning. I love the bed in the alcove and being wake up by the sun... wish I could live there.My son and I have a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing this place with us!

We had a lovely stay at this charming traditional bach. Although we didn’t meet the hosts in person, they created a welcoming experience and were great to deal with whenever we messaged them. The place offers a genuine, old-fashioned experience that’s perfect if you’re looking to unwind and enjoy a bit of classic Kiwi holiday charm.That said, we did feel that the cleanliness could have been a bit better to match the overall warmth and character of the bach. With a little extra attention in this area, it would be an even more delightful spot to stay.Overall, a wonderful experience thanks to the friendly communication and the authentic atmosphere. We’d recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional getaway with a personal touch.

Really lovely 4 nights in this eclectic good old kiwi bach. Really cosy and homey with everything you need. It was great being able to bring my dog, although please note it's not fully fenced for those who have dogs who like to explore. Leena was excellent to deal with and very responsive. The view truly is gorgeous and I was very content just sitting on the deck looking at it and reading. Beach just down the Rd for some good walks and a nice walk to the Kitekite Waterfall as well. Thanks for enabling me to share your piece of paradise. being able to

This is such a cute little authentic bach. It was laid back and so welcoming. What a stunning view. Great location with great walks around the corner. Enjoyed a nice meal at the RSA and great walks along the beach and to the waterfalls. Bach had everything we needed. The dog came too and loved it. Do go and enjoy this lovely wee bach.

Stay was during cyclone and this was difficult as although property held up it was not well prepared for this and 4 days without power. Prior to storm some issues as sleep out not available as advertised, with kitchen cleanliness and utensils that were old and not in good condition, and owner often on site. Did appreciate Leena’s contact and support after the storm.

I loved it here! The view is amazing,so great I had to paint it. Leena and Tui are awesome,so welcoming and caring. The bach is exactly what I was looking for,very homely,relaxed, peaceful and the decks...wow! I totally enjoyed the walks around the area especially at sunset! I stayed here by myself and felt safe. Everyone is so friendly. Loved that I could park outside the house and there was a gate which gave me the added sense of security. I will totally come back to stay again! Thank you Leena and Tui 🤙

Leena and Tui’s bach is everything we were hoping for. The photos of the view don’t do it justice, it’s incredible. The simple bach is plenty comfortable for our family of four plus the dog. And having them meet us for the check in was a nice personal touch. We’ll be back.
