The location is great, restaurants and theater within walking distance. Staff us very friendly. Rooms are spacious.

Situated only a couple of blocks from UC Berkeley and right on the main Shattuck street, we could not have wished for a better location for our son's college visit. This historical building is old, but is well maintained (with a couple of broken windows which their maintenance people were very quick to fix). The restaurant downstairs apparently offers very decent mediterranean cuisine according to my local friends. You'll never run out of dining options in the area, though.
Not the most friendly crew. When my teenage son and I got dropped off right in front of the hotel at around 3pm, no one came to help with our three suite cases (unlike the image that they present on their official website). We rolled them up the slope ourselves and reached the reception only to find our that the doorman had been chatting with the receptionist. When we reached the reception desk, he quietly left and went back to the door. After we checked-in, the bathroom needed some fixing. I called up and spoke to a receptionist who said she would send someone up. After 2.5 hours of waiting and not receiving anyone (nor an update), I came down to the reception. She had already gone home, and I got to speak to another receptionist. To my surprise, the first thing he said was "I'm not sure that's our housekeeper's job" without trying to fully understand what I was asking for. In the end, it turned out that we DID need their maintenance key to get the work that I was requesting to be done in our bathroom. The maintenance and house keeping people were all very helpful though.

Staying overnight in a historical place is always something special. We especially appreciated how accommodating the staff were when we encountered a problem with some amenities. We immediately got a new room where everything worked perfectly well. We could even open one of the historical windows. The location of the hotel is also excellent, two blocks away from Berkeley University and one minute from the next BART station.

Nice bathroom, comfortable bed.
TV was broken, lights didn’t work, DISGUSTING dirty windows caked with what looked like black mold. Waited an hour in the restaurant for bacon and eggs, and 30 minutes to retrieve my car.
