About this house rental

Summary:

A chukum-plastered townhouse in the heart of Mérida's historic centro, Agua en Flor was built by Norwegian textile artist and Supernaturae founder Benedicte Lux — designed with HEQU Studio as both a private home and a living extension of her natural-dye practice. The result is one of the most materially honest homes in the city: the same ancient Mayan hydraulic lime plaster used in cenotes for centuries covers the walls, the floors, and the natural pool at the courtyard's center.

Inside, the design logic runs all the way to the thread count. Supernaturae textiles — handwoven, naturally dyed, sourced with the rigour of a craft practitioner, not a decorator — fill every room. Steel-framed glazing dissolves the boundary between interior and courtyard; exposed timber beams run overhead; wrought iron details appear where another house might reach for chrome. This is a home where every material decision was made by someone who has spent a career thinking about exactly this.

Agua en Flor sleeps four across two bedrooms: a master suite with a king bed and en-suite bathtub, and a guest room with two single beds and a laptop workspace. Air conditioning throughout. A full kitchen, two full bathrooms, and a half-bath on the ground floor. The natural chukum pool — chemical-free, courtyard-set — is the spatial heart of the home.

Mérida's centro surrounds you: markets, merenderos, serious restaurants, and the Paseo de Montejo within walking distance. Chichén Itzá is two hours east. The Supernaturae showroom occupies the entrance room — access to the textiles, the provenance, and occasionally the maker herself.

The Space:

The home is configured across two floors with full indoor-outdoor flow through the central courtyard.

Bedrooms and bathrooms: Master suite (king bed, en suite with deep bathtub). Guest room (two single beds, ceiling fan, laptop workspace, shared full bathroom). Additional full guest bathroom and ground-floor half-bathroom - four bathrooms in total across the home.

Kitchen: Full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, oven, blender, coffeemaker, kettle, and complete cookware and tableware. Freezer. Mini fridge.

Outdoors: Natural chukum pool in the central courtyard - chemical-free and finished in the same lime plaster as the interior walls (with fish!). Garden. Patio accessible from the main terrace and a second back terrace.

Indoors: Air conditioning throughout. Sound system. Smart TV with cable. Wireless internet. Books. Clothing storage. Supernaturae showroom in the entrance room - naturally dyed textiles available to view and purchase.

Guest Access:

Guests have full access to the entire home: both floors, the central courtyard, the natural pool, the garden, both terraces, and the Supernaturae showroom in the entrance room. The showroom is part of the home's living space, not a separate commercial area. The street-facing entrance is on a traditional Mérida calle with natural stone walkways - some surfaces are uneven, consistent with the character of the historic centro. Downstairs living areas are accessible on the ground floor. Wireless internet is strong throughout. The guest room includes a dedicated laptop workspace.

The Neighborhood:

Mérida's historic centro is one of the best-preserved colonial grids in Mexico, and this address puts you inside it rather than adjacent to it. The Mercado Lucas de Gálvez - the neighborhood's working market, not its tourist version - is within walking distance: cochinita pibil tortas, papadzules, and fresh horchata at tables that predate the current design boom by several decades.

The city's restaurant scene has matured significantly in the past five years without losing its substance. Apoala and Oliva Enoteca are both serious kitchens within ten minutes on foot. The Paseo de Montejo - Mérida's 19th-century grand boulevard, lined with museums, cultural centers, and the best people-watching in the city - is a 15-minute walk north. Chichén Itzá is approximately 120 km east, a two-hour drive that works well as a day trip in the dry season.

Getting Around:

A car is not required for daily life from this address, the centro is compact and walkable, and Mérida has reliable app-based taxis (inDriver and Uber both operate here). For day trips to Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, or the Gulf coast, a rental car gives you significantly more freedom and is recommended. Mérida International Airport (MID) is approximately 8 km from the property, around 20 minutes by taxi.

Other Things to Note:

The Supernaturae showroom in the entrance room features naturally dyed textiles from Benedicte Lux's practice - handwoven pieces available to view and purchase during your stay. If something catches your eye, it comes with a provenance story worth hearing.

The natural pool is chemical-free and maintained with a biological filtration system: it looks and feels different from a conventional pool. You can swim in it, however no sunscreen is allowed, and there are fish in it!

Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00. The host will meet you on arrival. Quiet hours are 23:00–07:00 in keeping with the residential street. Pets are welcome. A security deposit of 1,000 EUR applies.

Interaction with Guests:

Best suited for guests who are comfortable in a self-catered home and value privacy, immersion, and genuine engagement with a place. Agua en Flor is a working creative home in Mérida's centro - the Supernaturae showroom is part of the space, the natural pool is not serviced daily, and on-demand cleaning is not available during a stay. The experience is designed for guests who want to live in Mérida for a few days, not observe it through a hotel window. It may not suit guests expecting hotel-style immediacy or serviced-apartment logistics.

Olí and Beni are both reachable throughout your stay, Olí locally and Beni as needed. The host will meet you at the property on arrival. After that, the home is yours - they're available when you need them and absent when you don't.
