Cottage in California
Reasons to book
About this cottage rental
This is not a brand-new luxury mountain home, and we don't want it to be. The cottage retains its rustic mountain character, including original cedar walls in the living space and bathroom, along with the quirks and craftsmanship you would expect from a home built more than 80 years ago. We've paired that history with thoughtful modern updates to create a comfortable and welcoming home base for exploring Northern California.
The completely renovated kitchen features chef-style appliances, cherry cabinetry, and teak flooring, making it equally comfortable for a weekend getaway or an extended stay. After a day on the mountain, river, or trails, come home to a cozy space that still feels distinctly Dunsmuir.
Your Mt. Shasta Basecamp
Think of it as a Tahoe-style mountain escape without the crowds. From the cottage, you're surrounded by some of Northern California's best outdoor recreation: hiking, skiing, mountain biking, fishing, waterfalls, alpine lakes, rivers, and the mystical beauty of Mt. Shasta.
The location puts you close to:
Upper Sacramento River: About a 10-minute walk to a secluded river beach
Hedge Creek Falls: Approximately a 30-minute walk
Mossbrae Falls: Nearby access to one of the area's most iconic waterfalls
Historic Downtown Dunsmuir: About 1 mile south
Mt. Shasta: About a 10-minute drive north to the alpine community and its restaurants, shops, and outdoor recreation
Mt. Shasta Ski Park: About 15 minutes door-to-door
Snowman's Hill: About 10 minutes for winter sledding
Lake Siskiyou & Castle Crags: An easy drive for swimming, paddling, hiking, and exploring
A Little About the Cottage
Part of the experience here is staying in a genuine 1942 mountain cottage. We've renovated where comfort and functionality matter while preserving the craftsman character that makes the house special.
Expect a comfortable, well-equipped and updated home, but also expect the personality, rustic finishes, and occasional imperfections of an 80+ year-old cottage. If you're looking for a newly constructed luxury cabin, this probably isn't the right fit. If you're looking for an inviting and authentic mountain home with modern amenities, history, and an exceptional location for exploring the Mt. Shasta region, we'd love to have you.
Come hike, ski, ride, fish, explore, or simply slow down and enjoy Dunsmuir from your own little piece of mountain history.
