In 1909, Clara Schönfeld built the house for herself and her children. In 1935, the villa was purchased by the city’s head forester, who rented out the apartments. In 1948, the landlord himself moved into the house. After his death, the villa was primarily home to teachers from the local high schools. Thanks to its central location and short distances to schools, the house was always a popular place for teachers’ families to live. It offered exquisite, upscale apartments. In 1985, a doctor purchased the property.
After Villa Schönfeld had stood unoccupied for four years in the center of Papenburg and was nearing a state of disrepair, the couple Johannes Hermann and Mechthild Funke purchased the house in 2013. After more than a year of renovation, the villa has been shining in new splendor since 2015. Thanks to meticulous attention to detail during the extensive renovation, the old charm of this well-known Papenburg villa has been restored.
