Stay close to home with a walk along the River Rothay to Stock Ghyll Force (0.5 miles), up to Wansfell Pike (1.5 miles) and onwards to Baystones (2 miles), admiring sweeping views down to Lake Windermere (0.5 miles) from various summits. Visit Stagshaw Gardens (1 mile), a glorious National Trust spot with woodland gardens, rambling paths and seasonal blooms to discover, or explore the Ambleside Roman Fort (1 mile), where ancient history comes to life. After every adventure, let the shops, pubs and restaurants in Ambleside's centre (0.5 miles) refresh you before heading home.
