Take a deep breath and enjoy every moment at Casa Calhameiro.

Calhameiro – A name given to the natives of Santa Susana. The name derives from the word hemp, a cannabis plant used in the manufacture of textile fibers such as linen (ropes). According to history, in times past, rope-making artisans from the North stayed here, pronouncing the plant's name slightly differently (Cânhamo-Cânlhamo), giving rise to "Calhameiro". The estate called Santa Susana was bequeathed to the Chapter by Bishop D. Pedro in the 16th century; it is already referenced as a parish in 1427 in parchment 35 at the collegiate church of São Pedro, which deals with the donation of an estate to the Church of São Pedro de Évora by Inês Afonso do Mato. Later it was divided into plots, each designated as a "Foro"; Example: "Foro do Inverno". In 1839 it belonged to the district of Évoramonte, in 1852 to that of Monsaraz and in 1874 to that of Redondo. The parish was extinguished in 1910 after the proclamation of the Republic and annexed to that of Redondo. This house is also a tribute/homage to the natives of Santa Susana, good, hospitable and affable people.
