Ernestine recognized that the world had changed irrevocably after the French Revolution. After losing her noble privileges, peasant leases, and traditional sources of income, she made a bold and forward-thinking decision: she renounced her noble title and married Gerhard Schmitz, the chief forester of the Prussian administration.
Thanks to his steady income and entrepreneurial ventures—ranging from a distillery to hop cultivation and slate mining—they preserved Malberg Castle and ensured its continued existence as it passed into bourgeois hands. This spirit of pragmatism, resilience, and understated elegance continues to define the Ernestine Suite to this day.
Designed in the unmistakable Biedermeier style, the suite exudes simple elegance, warmth, and coziness.
