La Albufera is a freshwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea (El Saler Beach) by a long forest and white sand dunes called Dehesa de El Saler, which are about 1 kilometer wide. This is one of the few places in the world where you can watch both the sunrise and the sunset from the same spot on the water. La Albufera was designated a SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) in 1986 and a SCI (Site of Community Importance) because all kinds of birds migrating from Northern Europe to Africa to spend the winter stop at La Albufera to rest.
