About this house rental
Welcome to one of Chania's most remarkable historic residences. A place where families, groups of friends, and multi-generational travelers come together under soaring ceilings in the heart of the Venetian old town.
Built in the 1930s, this magnificent neoclassical home stands on Chalidon Street, the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Old Town Chania. With 420 square meters of beautifully restored living space across two floors, this is not merely accommodation. It is an experience in living history.
The home's story is woven into its walls. Before World War II, this house was a social and political landmark for the city. After the bombing of Chania during the German occupation, the family was forced to abandon it, and in the postwar years it sheltered displaced families. Lovingly maintained by the same family for generations, it underwent careful restoration between 2020 and 2023, preserving its soul while adding every modern comfort.
From the moment you step through the ornate entrance into the grand foyer - with its stunning geometric mosaic floor and sweeping marble staircase - you'll understand why this home is a treasure.
The residence offers four beautifully appointed bedrooms that comfortably sleep up to 10 guests:
• Master Bedroom (sleeps 2-3): Generous king-size bed (205×190 cm) and a sofa bed for an extra person, vintage wardrobe, and ceiling fan. The large table by the window doubles as a workspace for remote workers.
• Double Bedroom with Ensuite (sleeps 2): Queen bed (160×200 cm), private shower bathroom
• Second Double Bedroom (sleeps 2): King bed (180×200 cm), uniquely decorated with period furniture and garden views. Individual AC unit for independent climate control.
• Twin Bedroom (sleeps 2): Two single beds (90×200 cm each), perfect for children, teens, or additional guests. Garden views with individual AC units.
• On the ground floor, in the room with the sofa bed, one person can sleep comfortably.
All mattresses are premium Cretastrom. A leading Cretan manufacturer known for quality and comfort.
• Bathrooms
Four fully equipped shower bathrooms plus one separate WC ensure comfort for everyone. Each bathroom blends historic charm with modern functionality. Marble surfaces, vintage-style brass fixtures, rainfall showerheads, and electric heated towel rails. Fresh toiletries, quality towels, and hairdryers are provided.
• Kitchen
The fully renovated kitchen features modern wooden cabinetry, quality appliances, and a cozy breakfast table. Everything you need is here: oven, dishwasher, refrigerator with freezer, espresso machine, filter coffee maker, kettle, toaster, and all cooking essentials. A door opens directly to the garden, perfect for morning coffee among the citrus trees.
• Living & Dining
The grand living room features soaring ceilings adorned with original decorative plasterwork and ceiling roses. Natural light floods through tall windows. Comfortable contemporary sofas provide ample seating, while antique sideboards, Persian rugs, and carefully curated artwork honor the home's heritage. The large dining table seats the whole party beneath a vintage chandelier and doubles as a spacious workspace for digital nomads and remote workers during your stay.
• Outdoors
The expansive private garden features mature citrus and olive trees, flowering bougainvillea, and meandering stone pathways. Most remarkably, part of the garden wall is formed by the ancient Venetian fortifications, a protected archaeological feature that makes this property truly unique.
A covered pergola with marble dining table offers shaded outdoor meals. A terrace on the upper floor provides panoramic views over Chania's rooftops to the sea.
• Climate Control
The home is comfortable year-round:
- Summer: Central cooling system throughout most of the house, plus individual AC units in the garden-side bedrooms for independent control.
- Winter: Central heating system plus storage heaters in every room. Electric heated towel rails in all bathrooms. The house is fully comfortable from November through March. Ideal for off-season stays and long-term winter retreats.
- Hot water: Solar water heaters supplemented by electric backup ensure hot water is always available.
• Workspace
Remote workers will find multiple options: the grand dining table in the living room (where the owner's own friends work during summer visits), the large table in the master bedroom, and a foldable desk with sofa in the study. WiFi is available throughout the property.

• Neighborhood character
Chalidon Street is the vibrant heart of Old Town Chania. The garden-side bedrooms may experience background music from nearby bars during summer evenings (typically 21:00–02:00). With windows closed, noise is significantly reduced. Earplugs are recommended for light sleepers. The front-facing rooms overlooking Chalidon are quieter. If you are sensitive to nightlife sounds, we recommend choosing the upper-floor bedrooms away from the garden.
• The Neighborhood
Located on Chalidon Street, the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Chania's enchanting Venetian old town. The iconic Venetian Harbor with its Egyptian lighthouse is a 4-minute walk. Explore the old Jewish quarter, the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, the Archaeological Museum (housed in the former Venetian Church of San Francesco), and countless galleries, tavernas, and artisan shops.
Beyond the Old Town, western Crete offers world-class experiences within easy reach: hike the Samaria Gorge (Europe's longest canyon), swim and snorkel at Balos Lagoon and Elafonisi Beach (both pink-sand), explore mountain villages for wine tasting and traditional Cretan cooking classes, or discover hidden coastal villages along the Apokoronas coast.
