Eating and drinking. The District Docklands is a short walk: Urban Alley Brewery, Fukutontei Ramen, Dohtonbori, 8Street for Asian hawker food, Saluministi for Italian, plus HOYTS and Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq for a wet afternoon. On NewQuay Promenade, Berth does dry-aged steak and seafood. Cargo Hall on Harbour Esplanade does modern Australian on the water.
Sport and events. Marvel Stadium is a short walk, and for a lot of guests that is the entire reason to book Docklands. Southern Cross Station sits beside it, connected by the Bourke Street pedestrian bridge. The MCG, Rod Laver Arena and John Cain Arena at Melbourne Park are a short tram or train ride east.
Getting around. You are inside the Free Tram Zone, so travel into the city centre costs nothing: routes 11, 30, 48, 70, 75 and 86 all serve Docklands, and the 70 and 86 run to The District. Southern Cross Station covers regional trains and the airport bus. Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine is roughly half an hour by car outside peak.
City and culture. Queen Victoria Market, Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne Central, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square are all a short tram ride. Library at The Dock on Victoria Harbour Promenade is a good local building with free Wi-Fi. Crown Melbourne, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and DFO South Wharf sit across the water. Flagstaff Gardens and Docklands Park are the nearest green space.
Practical. A Woolworths and a Dan Murphy’s sit at The District in the Market Lane precinct, which covers a full shop for six. The Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Women’s, the Royal Children’s and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre are in Parkville, ten minutes by car, with St Vincent’s in Fitzroy a little further. The University of Melbourne, RMIT University and Victoria University are a short tram ride.
