Its name comes from the special semi-circular configuration of its hills, and its proximity to the parish of Calheta. This parish was one of the oldest places on the Island subject to colonization and agricultural exploitation after the discovery and is one of the parishes richest in heritage and artistic treasures. João Fernandes Andrade, known as João Fernandes do Arco, settled here.
