About this house rental

This cottage is nestled in the woods under a large oak tree and is nearest to the start of our hiking trails. With your porch right across from the deer feeder, you will see plenty of deer coming out each morning and evening. The cottage has a cozy king-size bed with a pillow-top mattress and luxury linens. The sofa pulls out into a twin bed if needed. Built with refurbished wood, shiplap, doors, and windows and full of antiques, this adorable cottage is the perfect place for a quick weekend getaway, but big enough to be comfortable for weeks at a time for snowbirds escaping the cold. Enjoy complimentary wine and cheese and fresh eggs from our chicken coop.

Gary and Sherry spend most of their time here, where they manage the land, wildlife, and 4 guest cottages. Gary is a retired Navy Commander who chose a second career at Brinks Home Security before finally "retiring" once and for all to the Texas Hill Country. Sherry founded The Newsletter Company in Dallas in 1981 and is easing her way into retirement.

Why We Chose This Property: Growing up in Houston, Sherry vacationed in the Hill Country, enjoying the cool springs in summer and festivals like Wurstfest in the fall. During four years at UT, she explored the Hill Country towns from Wimberley to Luckenbach and all points in between. One of the most scenic views in all of the Hill Country is a stretch of FM 32 nicknamed "The Devil's Backbone" because of its winding curves and spectacular views. Gary & Sherry were frequent visitors to the area, and always dreamed of retiring in the Hill Country. When a ranch came up for sale in this choice spot, we bought the property and began building!

What makes our cottages different? The cottages are architecturally unique, a mixture of old and new with a focus on beautiful architectural pieces from the past. Sherry's passion is restoring historic structures, including a 100-year-old office building in Downtown Dallas and a home in the State-Thomas Historic district that dated back to the 1880s. You'll pass by an old blue Victorian house at the entrance on FM 32, which we moved from Austin in 2016 and have leased for to a couple who sells antiques. If you know of anyone who wants to launch a restaurant, send them our way!

We live on a ranch, and grant guests access to miles of hiking trails, some with view of Canyon Lake. We also provide farm fresh eggs from the coop.

Retirement in the Hill Country
