South View, Gunnerside

It’s a lovely cottage with plenty of room and a well equipped kitchen. I have only marked it down because it had not been cleaned or bedding changed when we arrived (after a phone call, this was resolved within an hour) and one of the showers was not working which meant that potentially six people could have been sharing one small shower. After another phone call, Sykes told me that they had informed me about it via email and on the booking.com app but this was not true and they made no attempt to get it fixed while we were there. Neither did they offer any refund. Other than that, the beds were comfortable, the area was peaceful and the pub was nearby (closed on Mondays). Gunnerside is central for all of Swaledale and the surrounding area although the road between Gunnerside and Low Row was closed from 17 August for drain work, so a detour via Crackpot was required to get to the Reeth end of Swaledale. The narrow roads across the Dale to Wensleydale are spectacular but I wouldn’t attempt them in the dark. I recommend the chippie in Hawes! There is a nice little terrace in front of the house with furniture.

There was a screeching noise when you flushed the downstairs WC and a loud noise of constantly running water. As this was located off the kitchen it was a bit disturbing while having breakfast. It didn’t bother us but large parties should be aware that there are two bathroom upstairs one with a shower cubicle and toilet and the other with a bath and shower over (not working), so only one toilet upstairs between three bedrooms. The rough path up to the entrance gate was easy to walk up but a slight struggle with luggage and could possibly be slippery in winter. There is another house attached to this one and they appear to share the gate, so potentially there could be people walking past the front windows but we didn’t see anyone.

A couple of bins hadn't been emptied. Living room and Bathroom. Didn't bother us but may some.

The house is in a lovely village close to walks by the river and in the hills. We were a group of 5 friends & found it very spacious, with everything we needed to self cater after big walks in the hills. It was helpful having 2 shower rooms and an extra toilet. The pub next door is very friendly and had lovely food.
