Collection O Southern Star Hotel

I booked this hotel because it seemed to offer the same value as other hotels in Ho Chi Minh City at a fraction of the price, and I was right. Although it is far from the city center, I like it that way. It is clean, functional, safe, comfortable, and it has absolutely terrific staff and reasonably decent WiFi. It can be difficult to do some things on the WiFi if you don't take certain measures, such as keeping the number of open browser tabs down. But it is very good WiFi by Southeast Asian budget hotel standards. And there are enough outlets that I don't have to unplug the fridge in order to use my laptop or any such inconvenience. I highly recommend this hotel, and especially the wonderful staff that really add extra value to the bargain.

Agoda really seemed to be pushing this hotel. Rates were only half of what I could find for any other hotel. That made me nervous, especially since the reviews seemed to indicate that there might be some trouble with the WiFi at least for some rooms. WiFi is crucial for what I am doing here in Ho Chi Minh City. But I couldn't find a hotel that seemed to match this hotel for value without paying at least over twice as much. My confidence in the hotel plummeted further when I couldn't seem to reach them on their telephone number at all. But I decided I would try them out anyway. I didn't have to pay till I arrived, so perhaps I could just go elsewhere if they didn't have good WiFi. Another moment of pause came when it was so far out in the boonies that the taxi fare was going to be really high. But I went ahead and took the risk. Movein was a bit rough. Reception allowed me to test the WiFi before demanding payment. The WiFi worked beautifully well for just one Youtube window playing. Other problems would arise later, but I have learned how to navigate slow Southeast Asian budget hotel WiFi like a pro - as long as a signal actually exists. Basically, if a page has frozen, always Reload, and ALWAYS keep open browser tabs and applications to as bare a minimum as possible. For my light touristing, study-heavy purposes, being out in the boonies is a definite plus. Since foreigners are extremely rare in this part of town, the locals are extremely friendly, curious, and just happy to have a foreigner in their midst. While the neighborhood is far from the city center, the hotel is on an extremly busy lane that has most everything you need on a daily basis right here in the local neighborhood. From Cambodian noodle soup and pho to laundry and a gym, the neighborhood is largely self-contained and self-sustaining. There is a non-chain convenience store right next to the hotel. The rooms are quite small but well-appointed, generally with two chairs and a small table. The table is covered in glass, so you'll need to use something under your mouse for it to operate properly - paper or a book. Or use a trackpad. So far as I can tell, most of the rooms don't have access to windows. However, my door lock battery died as soon as I moved in, so they transferred me to a room with a window - I specifically asked for a window. The beds are very comfortable, with just the right amount of firmness. There is nothing like a dresser or a wardrobe, so I store some of my clothes on one of the two chairs. The rooms have basically everything else you could need though. I like the setup in the main room because the desk looks right over the top of the bed, allowing me to do professional interviews if I so desire. No troublesome beds in the background. The bathroom is well-appointed. My newer room has a counter area all around the sink, which is basically an attractive basin set in a hole. The towel racks are adequate, though a bit close to the toilet for my taste, being right above it. The shower in my room can't be held in place overhead. They have said that they are going to fix it, but it still hasn't happened after two weeks, so I susppose it never shall. It's basically alright because I can store the showerhead about halfway down and still largely be wet while not holding the showerhead, but it is a bit irksome to have to store it awkwardly like that. but at least it works. One time late at night there was no hot water, and there is no sign of an individual spot water heater, so I am guessing they use a central water heater that can run out of hot water. So be aware that, depending on the time of day, you might have to take a cool shower, which isn't as bad as it sounds in this hot climate. The air conditioner and ceiling fan do an excellent job cooling the room. There is a very small fridge, which does fairly well for storing water. But sometimes the water freezes even on the lowest setting, so be careful. There are enough outlets, but they aren't

Star looked at me like shit he enemy, area was such a bad area, the hotel was tolerable but we left and got another one in district 1 this was such n district 12, no thanks
