What a really nice place to stay. I would highly recommend this place if you are a non golfer or particularly if you are. The hotel is so clean and lovely and easily holds its 4 star reputation and standing. I am a golfer and played the Nicklaus course is the ultimate challenge but what a course. Backside its one of his best and its easy to understand why. Its a gem. Can't wait to come back again. It wont be long as I've rebooked for a further stay in October. Mel

    Lovely room, great staff.

The good: The bed was really comfortable and bigger than our Superking! Sheets were clean and crisp, and the room service was very good, with tea/coffee/milk/buscuits/water replenished with every clean. The pool/sauna/steam room/Jacuzzi were great, with seperate pool areas for different uses. We did not use the gym, but it looked well equipped. There were a range of dining areas to suite different tastes, of which we used one, once. We had 4 mezze dishes which cost over £40 - we found the value of the food to be poor, and much better value (in price/choice/quality) existed outside the complex (from our limited use of the resteraunt facilities). The Staff: Mostly young women. Generally inattentive - all seemed to be 'in training', or at least, that was the impression. For example, the pool locker area uses RFID wrist bands, which are also used to access the facilities via a turnstile (which we of course didn't know until after our first use). Collecting towels from the reception, they didn't ask us if we needed one, was it our first use of the facilities etc., - a general theme throughout - they respond to a specific request without thinking about the why and engaging with the guest. They didn't always know answers to questions about the resort. By contrast, one of the elder women working the night shift was very helpful and showed my wife the facilities and was prepared to spend time explaining what was on offer. When we checked-out, nobody asked about our stay. The room: Dated - needs a proper refurb. The chairs were unuseable (with backs so straight you'd probably crook your neck). The small TV, possibly from the Ark, was Standard Definition only - forget 4k or even HD! No streaming options as the TV was not 'smart' or even connected to WiFi. The single socket under my bedside table was a challenge to get to - a good crawl on the floor and some dexterity prevailed. The tiles on the bathroom floor were missing grout in a number of places, and the sealant around the bath looked like it was done after 10 pints. The mirror wasn't heated, so good luck seeing anything after a shower, especially as the extraction didn't work (wouldn't even hold up a piece of the single ply loo roll provided..). The A/C unit worked, sort of - it was the same as the Holiday Inn we came from, just with 25% of the performance - probably needing maintenance, like the rest of the room. The edges of the carpet were grey with accumulated dust, and the toilet basin was dirty due to poor cleaning - I had to do it myself with the loo brush, and I managed to get it sparkling, so why couldn't they! There was grass on the carpet behind the chair, the walls had dust on that wiped off on the hand, the inside (and outside) of the windows were dirty - I really could go on, but the gist is the rooms were dated, the maintenance was poor, and the clenliness was lacking. We didn't complain, as it was evident this wasn't a 'room thing' - it was systemic. The Verdict: We came to St Mellions after staying in the Holiday Inn at Gloucester - by contrast, that was a palace - perhaps some of the management should stay there to compare and contrast. In my view, such failures cleanly rest with a disinterested or incapable management - failing to enforce standards and owners unwilling to invest in the upkeep of the rooms, relying on trading from the name - well, that just isn't enough in 2026. I can't speak to the golfing facilities or the rooms overlooking the golf course.
