The Old Toll House, Debenham

The keys were in a lock box outside the property. I was sent detailed instructions by email beforehand. The property is centrally located in Debenham and easy to find. It's a quirky building and suits people who like to stay in buildings with a bit of visible history. The tea and coffee supplied from next door Brufords coffee shop and deli was appreciated, as was the fresh milk in the fridge.

I did nick my thumb on the bread knife edge (my fault) whilst doing the washing up on the day of departure. The risk of this happening could however have been avoided if the property had supplied a washing up brush. The mattress on the double bed was softer than we are used to. Secondary glazing would help keep the street noise down. The staircase is very steep - and has shallow treads - so care does need to be taken (we were aware of this in advance). It would have been interesting to learn more about the property's own history.

Loved the location. Near all amenities such as a chip shop, pubs, grocery store. Loved the coffee and milk that was provided. Rooms were clean. Beds were very comfortable. Hosts were helpful and communicated well.

No garden or patio but we knew this when we booked. Husband sustained 3 head injuries on the beams ans the stairs are difficult with suitcases, but all in its charm.

If you’re after quaint and don’t mind it being on a thoroughfare (we were quite taken aback about the level of comings and goings past even quite late midweek!) then this is the place. It was easy to park close by and has been recently refurbished.

Other reviewers and the details note it but if you’re 6ft plus this is not the place for you, we’re not but it would’ve been tricky beyond a night’s stay. There were crumbs evident on tray above microwave which you wouldn’t expect and the synthetic duvets were very heavy with no alternatives to layer thickness and windows which open little if at all (we couldn’t close bathroom window after managing to open it). We were a little perturbed to find people walking and staring in in the morning as no blinds or net curtains, I get the aesthetics but again it would put us off hanging about and annoy on a longer stay. I was really disappointed to note that the next door cafe which is owned by same people doesn’t take cash (epic no-no for me) & bleary eyed realising too late to back out the flat white was scalding hot to boot though tasted good once it had cooled down. Staff seemed lovely though and cinnamon bun was good. Discount offered could’ve been more generous or an included breakfast option maybe?
