Pleasant place in good location

Avoid, we only stayed 2 out of 3 nights booking. No money has been refunded.

Breakfast was a very basic cooked breakfast. The dinning room was freezing, the waitress did eventually turned a heater on and put a wedge behind to the door to close it. It was 0 degrees outside and this was blowing into the dinning room. We were served then ignored no one asking if everything was fine or if we required fresh tea or toast.

We got no sleep. We were aware that the rooms were basic and a pub was below us, this did not bother us. The problem was that around midnight a party started upstairs and the noise went on for quite a few hours. The second night the same room was having quite an argument followed by heavy thudding, it was petrifying to listen too. This stopped after a visit from the police. Understandable we had had enough and although booked for a third night we left, the owners said that there was a foreign family living above us, and that she would look at her CCTV and get back to us. I have emailed them a few times as we have still not received our money back but they have not got in contact with us. The owners were completely unaware of the commotion that we had had to endure through the night with the police arrived at 5.30am. There is no emergency contact details for the residents to use.

Fabulous- would highly recommend this hotel for a weekend in Ballater

Bedroom just refurbished and lovely. Super comfy bed. Breakfast was lovely/freshly made (could have been included in price!)

Good pub. Great location. This was our 2nd time at The Barrel.

Lovely town. Beautiful countryside. The Barrel is great for and overnight stop en route to Speyside. Breakfast was a properly good, full Scottish. Superb!

Do not book unless you absolutely have to!

The beds were comfortable and seemed clean. The lady who greeted us was also nice!

The rooms are above a pub and very poorly soundproofed - we couldn't sleep until 1 am because it was a Friday and people wanted to have fun - which is warranted - but due to the rooms' quality it was at our rest's expense. The shower had very low pressure. The Wi-Fi didn't work even though we had the correct password (which we had to go in the pub for and ask the lady who greeted us, as it was nowhere). We arrived at 8 pm and the restaurant refused to serve us even though it said nowhere that the kitchen closed so early (online it just says the place is open until 12 am). They overcharge you because it's one of the few places around, which pushes you to say yes to anything.

This would have rated 10 out of 10 except for the one downside which was the shower which had zero water pressure and was truly appalling. In over 40 years of travelling I can honestly say it was the worst shower I have ever experienced.

First class accommodation and food at very competitive prices.

Recently refurbished to a very high standard. Although our booking didn’t include any food, we decided to have dinner in the bar. We were served with the best steak pie that either of us has eaten. Furthermore it was served with delicious chips and plenty of vegetables. The standard of food prompted us to book a breakfast as well and we weren’t disappointed.

Our only complaint would be that there was no provision for storing clothing (e.g. wardrobe) in our room. Since we were only staying one night this didn’t inconvenience us.

Perfect spot for Ballater and beyond!

Location was right in centre of Ballater, staff were brilliant, check in was great. Room was really clean, comfy and had everything we needed. We had evening meal here and food was excellent, service was great, staff were really busy but all three of guys were just getting on with it, friendly and efficient!

Good hotel room at a reasonable price

Location was spot on with good parking. The room was comfortable and clean and we had everything we needed. Small downside was that the bed was quite hard and a little uncomfortable.

There seemed to be a festival on at the time we stayed so the bar was exceptionally busy so we couldn’t get anywhere near the bar to have dinner. Other hotel guests were extremely noisy in a nearby room parting until after 2am which was not great for us.

Lovely old village inn at centre of Ballater and great staff

Staff at The Barrel are very helpful and it’s definitely service with a smile. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Good hearty breakfast, lovely lunch and evening meals served. Location is right in the centre of Ballater facing the village green and the free car park is Right next to the Barrel. Would definitely recommend

Perfect Experience at a Great Price

Great Scottish experience, sleeping above a pub in an authentic small town after meal downstairs. Perfect. Room was immaculate. Great to have a couple coffee shops down the street as well.

The property is rooms over a pub in centre of Ballater. There is food on offer but we ate elsewhere. Dog friendly at no extra charge - easy to take them outside to pee in morning etc.

Abbiamo dormito per una notte, ottima la vicinanza al Castello Balmoral, al nostro arrivo era troppo tardi per cenare nella birreria ma abbiamo potuto fare una ottima colazione la mattina seguente. La stanza al primo piano era abbastanza spaziosa, moderna con una bella finestra che affacciava sul parco difronte. Bella la doccia e di ottime dimensioni. Il personale super gentile e disponibile. Parcheggio disponibile.
