Situated within 6 acres of the owner’s land, and accessed by a rough track, yet less than a mile away from the village centre. Heckberry Cottage dates back to the 1800s and retains much of the character of an older building, but with plenty of contemporary features too. The living and dining area are open plan to the galley kitchen, and are comfortable and practical with a large multi-fuel burner that heats the whole house. The views from the ground floor look straight across the fields out to the Weardale valley and are totally uninterrupted, apart from the horses in the field opposite! On the first floor are a shower room with shower cubicle, as well as a comfortable double bedroom and compact bunk room that is ideal for children.

The cottage is a real find for couples to enjoy a romantic break, small families wanting to explore the local area or guests who enjoy a walking or cycling holiday. With numerous established public footpaths that lead right from the door and through the fields, this is a walker’s paradise. The Weardale Way passes through the owner’s grounds and is a very popular route, as is the short walk into the centre of St John’s Chapel. Boasting two village pubs, a tearoom, café and small supermarket, St John’s Chapel has a thriving community that offers a great welcome to visitors all year round. Only 12 miles from Stanhope, guests also have the opportunity to explore this popular Weardale town and take a visit to the Dales Centre which offers plenty to see and do.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum is another popular destination for families and is only a little over 5 miles away and definitely worth a visit. Also recommended is a trip to the small Cumbrian town of Alston which shares the title of being the highest market town in England. Alston boasts tearooms, a farmers market and local pubs, and is a popular stop off for cyclists enjoying a ride through the counties of Northumberland, Cumbria and County Durham. A little further afield but still within around an hour’s drive, guests can visit the cathedral city of Durham, the Lake District and Northumberland National Park. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall for ancient history, Roman forts and settlements, the Durham Heritage Coast for fabulous beaches and Newcastle upon Tyne for culture, including The Sage and a great day out shopping. Warm, welcoming and traditional, Heckberry Cottage is the perfect retreat for guests looking to enjoy a quiet break at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

What can we say, mmmmmm what a break. Remote, peaceful, idyllic and easier to cram all these words into 1 'BRILLIANT '!!!!!!. Everything described in the brochure and more. Much mentioned in other reviews about country lane accessibility, it is what is a country track. The track was undergoing face lift whilst we we're staying there, we coped easily. We found that the main complaint for this stay and many more holiday makers is that we didn't plan long enough and with the cottages popularity were unable to extend our stay longer. A great cottage to explore the local area, so many walks to do with our dogs just a stones throw away. The cottage is remote by car but the village is a very short walk over a bridge and you are pretty much there. The track to the cottage is a bit dodgy for the average hatchback, just take it slowly! We had a wonderful week at this cottage. Had everything we needed and was quiet and private. Lots of lovely walks nearby and village has shop, cafe and pubs so we didn’t need to use the car all week. Track down to the cottage is a bit of a squeeze but was absolutely fine for our Golf. Highly recommended! Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

We had a lovely stay. Owners were very pleasant, the cottage was really nice with a welcoming fire lit for when we arrived. The area is ideal for us as we brought our dog (Joey) whom loves to walk miles every day. There are two pubs in the village, both were very friendly and accommodating. We'd like to visit again. Lovely cosy cottage in a great location for beautiful walks. With a large car the driveway to the cottage was tight in places, we certainly wouldn’t have wanted to do it in the dark. That said it wouldn’t put us off going to the cottage again. Heckberry is well equipped with stunning views and lovely walks right from the door. The owners (and horses!) were very welcoming and it was lovely to arrive to an open fire and welcome pack. We had a great stay and would certainly recommend.
