Situated within 6 acres of the owner’s land, and accessed by a rough track, yet less than a mile away from the village centre. Heckberry Cottage dates back to the 1800s and retains much of the character of an older building, but with plenty of contemporary features too. The living and dining area are open plan to the galley kitchen, and are comfortable and practical with a large multi-fuel burner that heats the whole house. The views from the ground floor look straight across the fields out to the Weardale valley and are totally uninterrupted, apart from the horses in the field opposite! On the first floor are a shower room with shower cubicle, as well as a comfortable double bedroom and compact bunk room that is ideal for children.

With numerous established public footpaths that lead right from the door and through the fields, this is a walker’s paradise. The Weardale Way passes through the owner’s grounds and is a very popular route, as is the short walk into the centre of St John’s Chapel. Boasting two village pubs, a tearoom, café and small supermarket, St John’s Chapel has a thriving community that offers a great welcome to visitors all year round. Only 12 miles from Stanhope, guests also have the opportunity to explore this popular Weardale town and take a visit to the Dales Centre which offers plenty to see and do.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum is another popular destination for families and is only a little over 5 miles away and definitely worth a visit. Also recommended is a trip to the small Cumbrian town of Alston which shares the title of being the highest market town in England. Alston boasts tearooms, a farmers market and local pubs, and is a popular stop off for cyclists enjoying a ride through the counties of Northumberland, Cumbria and County Durham. A little further afield but still within around an hour’s drive, guests can visit the cathedral city of Durham, the Lake District and Northumberland National Park. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall for ancient history, Roman forts and settlements, the Durham Heritage Coast for fabulous beaches and Newcastle upon Tyne for culture, including The Sage and a great day out shopping. Warm, welcoming and traditional, Heckberry Cottage is the perfect retreat for guests looking to enjoy a quiet break at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
