La Grange: Between sea and mountains, spacious gîte with private pool.

We had a lovely time in this beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and furnished gite, despite the wet weather we experienced. We loved the bamboo as house plants, the shelves in the bedroom secured by rope, and spacious bathroom with its massive sink and walk in shower. The house was clean, comfortable and had all that we required for our stay. The owners were helpful, pointing out a number of interesting places to visit whilst remaining unobtrusive. The gite is about 2 km out of the village an set back from the (minor) road: it was therefore peaceful and quiet. There is a good boulangerie in the village, a range of shops in nearby towns such as Sallies-de-Béarn and Peyrehorade, and many local markets within a short drive (that at Salies is recommended). We love walking and there are many good routes from nearby towns, many with great views of the Pyrenees. The Office de Tourisme in Salies sells a very good book of 60 local walks which gave us a real chance to explore the Béarn des Gaves. Other highlights included a day at Cap Breton and a trip to the beautiful St Jean-Pied-de-Port, where we encountered pilgrims on the Chemin de St Jacques massing to cross the Pyrenees. A lovely gite in a lovely part of the world. If the weather had been kinder we could have seen so much more - perhaps we will have to make a return visit.
