Welcome to Ten Down — a stunning oceanfront retreat at the very top of the 4x4 beaches of Carova Beach, Northern Outer Banks, North Carolina. Situated just a few tenths of a mile from the Virginia border and the fence that keeps the famous Corolla wild horses in North Carolina, Ten Down offers the most secluded, peaceful, and truly wild beach experience you'll find anywhere on the East Coast.
A 4-wheel drive vehicle is required to reach Ten Down — and at 11 miles up the 4x4 beach, this is as far from the crowds as you can get. The beach in front of Ten Down is among the least traveled on the entire Outer Banks. Just you, the ocean, the wild horses, and the kind of quiet that makes you wonder why you ever left.
The Home
Ten Down is spread across three thoughtfully designed levels. The top level great room is the heart of the home — a beautiful open living, dining, and kitchen space with comfortable seating and a south-facing screened porch perfect for dining outside or simply sitting a spell with the ocean breeze. Every detail has been considered for your comfort and relaxation.
The Bedrooms
Head down to the second level for four beautifully appointed bedrooms — a king master suite with TV and deck access, a queen master suite with TV and deck access, a twin room, and a duo-bunk room (double bottom bunk, twin upper). The twin and bunk rooms share a hallway bath. ALL bedrooms have private deck access, and the second level deck is home to the hot tub — perfect for stargazing on clear Carova nights.
The first level features a comfortable sitting room with a daybed and TV, plus a full bath — ideal as a quiet retreat or overflow sleeping space.
The Dune-Top Gazebo
Ten Down's most unique feature is the private walkway from the house out to the beach, complete with a one-of-a-kind screened gazebo perched right on top of the dune. Watch the wild horses from your elevated perch, take in the ocean views, or simply relax in the shade while the waves roll in below. You could literally never touch sand if you didn't want to — but trust us, you'll want to dip a toe or two in that beautiful Atlantic.
Outside
The pool area is expansive and inviting, with a cabana bath, outdoor shower, and gas and charcoal grills. Pool and hot tub are typically open late May through end of September. Two beach parking passes are included.

Ten Down is not pet friendly.
Saturday check-in. Linens and towels provided. No smoking. No graduation groups or events. Free unlimited parking at the house. Two beach parking passes included.

Year 7 was wonderful! We love the house and amenities! A little sad we will have neighbors next door next year, but that was to be expected eventually. We cannot wait until year 8! (Still subtly hinting for an ice machine ;) )

This was our 7th year going to this house. We enjoyed ourselves as usual but had some issues during our stay. The AC had issues most of the week but Laura was quick to bring us window units so we could sleep comfortably. The house was very clean when we arrived except for the gazebo on the dune. There was piles of sand everywhere and the chairs were also dirty and covered in sand. We hosed out the entire thing so we could enjoy it all week. The house could definitely use some TLC. The decks on all floors and around the pool need updating as does the master bath. Toilet wouldn’t flush right and the shower drain was massively clogged, not to mention the shower itself could be replaced. The stepping stones from the pool area to the bottom door could definitely be bigger and more sturdy, it’s hard to walk on them especially at night. The upstairs AC vents were all leaking water onto the floors and tables but this may have been due to the AC issues we were having. All in all it was still a great vacation but comparing year 1 to year 7 it’s definitely time this house got some TLC. We’d love to return if it was pet friendly but we will look elsewhere now since bringing our dog is easier than finding a dog sitter at home.
