About this cabin rental

WELCOME!: Historic, unique, tasteful and serene - the Edward Tyler house, ca. 1783, is a stone cabin 20 minutes SE of Louisville on 13 acre estate. Near the famous bourbon trail, rental includes full cabin and large screen porch overlooking pond with fountain. First floor has living/dining/kitchen space with small sofa bed and stone fireplace (gas); queen bed and full bath on second floor. American and European antique furnishings and fine art welcome you to fully updated home with central HVAC.

THE SPACE: Cabin was originally built in the late 1700s and has been updated to modern standards (electric, plumbing, HVAC) yet retains original features including stone walls, large wooden beams and original yellow poplar floors. Typical of structures of this vintage and to preserve space, the stairway to the second floor is steeper and more narrow than todays standard size; anyone uneasy with non-uniform stairs should take note. Height of doorways are also shorter than today's standards. In total, the cabin is approximately 620 sq. ft., plus another 240 sq. ft. in the attached screened porch (860 sq. ft. in total). Cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits within the larger Tyler Rural Settlement District, also a National Historic Trust designation.

GUEST ACCESS: Guests will have full use of the cabin and attached screened porch (14' x 17'). Additionally, guests have access to the lawn area behind the cabin, and can also enjoy sitting by the pond (no fishing please). Cabin is accessed from brick terrace that adjoins both the cabin and the main house, and leads to a stone walkway to cabin door. Please note the stone in the walkway is natural formation, not uniform cut stone (see photos).

THE PROPERTY: Property is located 15 miles east of downtown Louisville - approximately 20 minute drive via I-64. Area is primarily residential, and most neighbors have acreage (host property is located on 13 acres). Jeffersontown, a historic small town, is approximately 2 miles away with the very popular 3rd Turn Brewery, a dog friendly brewery (indoor and outdoor) in an old converted church. Some additional highlights of the area are included below.

DISTILLERIES
You will have a front row seat to Kentucky's largest attraction - the Kentucky Bourbon Trail! The cabin is centrally located among the 42 designated distilleries on the bourbon trail, most of which are within an hours drive of the property. 95% of the bourbon distilled in the country comes from this historic collection of distilleries. You will be the envy of your friends when they learn that you stayed in the original cabin on the Tyler Settlement property where on January 1, 1798 the Federal Government granted Moses Tyler (Edward Tyler's son) a tax license to distill 90 gallons of bourbon in still number 37!! Talk about bourbon history!

PARKS
Louisville Metro is blessed to have over 120 public parks, 17 of which were designed by the vaulted Fredrick Law Olmsted firm (connected by 6 Olmsted designed parkways). Notably, located just 3 miles from the property, the Parklands system of parks consists of 4,000 acres of public park space with several unique destinations and attractions (the Egg Lawn, Oxbow, Big Beech Woods, the Silo, the Grand Allee, Sky Meadow, Catfish Bend - to name a few) sprinkled throughout the park system. Kayak, hike, bike, complete (sports fields), fish, shoot archery and convene with nature in this natural landscape.

FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE
Louisville regularly appears on lists of top 'foodie cities' with a diverse and creative culinary and cocktail scene. Some of the popular neighborhoods like the Highlands, NuLu and St. Matthews are home to concentrations of these gastro-glories! See the Guidebook in this listing for more details and suggestions.

ATTRACTIONS
We all know Louisville is home to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby is run annually on the first Saturday in May. On the site of Churchill Downs is the Kentucky Derby Museum where you can learn all about the rich thoroughbred history in the bluegrass state. You can also visit the Louisville Slugger Museum where you actually watch the iconic 'Louisville Slugger' bats made. What you may not know is Louisville is also home to an impressive inventory of arts organizations, grounded by the Louisville Orchestra, the Louisville Ballet, the Kentucky Opera, the JB Speed Museum and Actors Theatre - among several others. You will also want to consider these attractions:
Muhammad Ali Museum
Frazier History Museum
21c Art Museum
Keeneland Racetrack (in Lexington)

Property is served by typical ride share options - Uber, Lyft, taxi. There is no public transportation in this area of town.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE: Driveway provides access to both the main house and the stone cabin, so guests will access the property through the main driveway and park by the garage. The distance between the driveway and the cabin front door is approximately 60 feet. Guests will be provided access code to the driveway gate and to the cabin door lock approximately two (2) days prior to arrival. Driveway is composed of crushed limestone with stone curbing, so host requests that guests make sure to stay on the limestone surface, and stay off the stone curbing.

Everything was outstanding!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary stay in this historic stone cabin. The host was attentive, the setting was lovely and comfortable, and the cabin brought the area’s history to life. We would gladly return. The only thing I would draw attention to is that this is not a handicap accessible property. The only bathroom is up a narrow staircase that could pose a problem for very senior guests or those with difficulty navigating stairs. Having said that, we loved everything about our stay!

The cabin was cozy and inviting with so much history, and the grounds are meticulously maintained and absolutely gorgeous. Don was very nice to talk to and we enjoyed the 2 house pups that would let us pet them.

It was peaceful and quiet! We loved everything. Wish we were not so busy so we could have enjoyed the house more
