About this house rental

Les Mirabelles (formerly Fig Tree) - This gite is part of an ancient farmhouse which is set in its own private grounds of 0.5 acres. The property, which dates from before the French revolution, has been tastefully restored to include all modern amenities without losing its rustic charm and character.

"Les Mirabelles" gite was the old cattle shed, housing hay lofts and oxen which ploughed the local fields and vineyards. Now renovated to a charming, self-contained accommodation, and replicating the characteristic beams, stone walls and floors which is set in the deep French countryside. The gite overlooks the garden and mixed fruit orchard. The gite is secluded and separate from the main farmhouse with its own front door and double door opening on to the garden. Guests have the private use of the swimming pool.

You enter the gite through the front door and you are greeted with an open plan living area which is light and airy.

There are a number of walks - the modest Gardonette stream is an amazing route takings its source not far from Monbazillac and then losing itself in the Dordogne some 50km or so. A journey that mingles between hillsides covered with vineyards, sunflower and cornfields, meadows and small shady valleys which in passing, greets hamlets, or chateaux and provides the rambler with a few surprises! The Gardonette takes the rambler into another experience.

Saussignac takes you approximately 15-20 minutes to reach along an old Roman road through the vines. Gageac has a beautiful chateau and the superb vineyard of 'Clos de Vigne' - the subject of Patricia Atkinson's best selling books - "The Ripening Sun" and "La Belle Saison".

Sigoules is set amongst the vineyards where you will find a selection of shops (baker, butcher, grocery store, a hairdresser and also a doctor and pharmacy!|). For those of you who desire an active outdoor break, the area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf (18 hole) at the famous "Chateau de Vigiers" - just a few kilometres away and may be followed by an excellent lunch or dinner in their restaurant. Tennis and horse riding are among other sports facilities available.

All summer long, the medieval town of Bergerac has many wonderful restaurants - just 15 minutes drive from the gite. Saussignac, Sigoules, Eymet and Issigeac and other local towns have markets, concerts and exhibitions with lots to do and see.

"Les Mirabelles" gite offers you a perfect location from which to base yourself whilst you pursue whatever activities you enjoy most. The gite is set in half-acre of land with a typical country garden. A private swimming pool which is not overlooked, offers privacy for the bather. The gite accommodation is full of rustic charm with oak beams, a log fire (for winter visitors). There is an open plan dining and sitting room, with kitchen attached. A modernised shower/wet room is on the same floor. A mezzanine floor provides bedroom for 2 people. French and English TV is provided with numerous DVD's as well as board games.

We had an amazing stay, Jill and Marylene were wonderful! They had a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding history in the area which was so interesting. We were left to ourselves and the gite was perfect. It had everything you needed, even some left over mosquitos spray which you will need being close to the Dordogne. The pool was welcome due to the heat and warm. You couldn’t wish for a more relaxing stay and lovely people. We visited Eymet and Montpazier two beautiful villages, with shops, markets and restaurants both recommended, but mostly stayed at the gite which says it all I think.

We enjoyed our stay at Les Mirabelles. Jill and Marylene were good hosts. We enjoyed eating outside on the terrace, using the pool to cool down and we visited from Bordeaux up to Les Eyzies. Good location if you want to take a train and cycle, which we did several times, as Gardonne station is close by. Also lots of vineyards close by.

The rustic property, in a rural location, is outwardly very pretty. Inside, it’s a little gloomy and cluttered for our liking although I suppose that’s to be expected from a property of this nature and a feature which I’m sure will be appreciated by a lot of visitors. The pool is cleaned and prepared for use daily, which was appreciated. It should be noted however that it’s not ‘completely’ private, as per the description, and can be viewed easily from the owner’s adjoining property. There was no time, while using the pool, when we saw the owner and I’m sure they do their best to provide privacy but this isn’t quite the same as it being ‘completely’ private. The part of the description I take greatest umbrage with is that it’s air conditioned (along with an icon of an air conditioning unit). This property is NOT air conditioned and I don’t consider the provision of two modestly sized fans a replacement for actual, bonafide air conditioning. I did point this out to Jill but my thoughts were dismissed out of hand. I find this description at best to be clumsy, and at worse, misleading. We stayed for nine days, the first two being over 30C, and the mezzanine was unbearably hot overnight. Mercifully, the remainder were low 20C and the place was fine. Prospective renters should be aware of this and be mindful of the expected weather at the time of their proposed booking!
