It served our needs but unfortunately we wouldn’t stay again
Having previously been to Wells/North Norfolk, we booked the Sea Shanty to use as a base for our summer holiday this year. I would say the property would be classed as ‘cosy’ within an estate agent’s listing, with downstairs being adequate but the size the house meant there was little to no breeze.
We were welcomed with milk, cookies and crisps as well as a guide to the house and some local places to visit recommendations, which was a nice touch.
There are plenty of white ‘house’ towels but these aren’t for beach use. The welcome book stated beach towels are provided but we didn’t find any of these - luckily we bought our own.
The kitchen has the basic necessities which meant we didn’t need to eat out for every meal, I would add dishwasher to facilities on here though as we were under the impression it didn’t have one and ended up buying tablets locally.
The beds are really comfortable. The sheets and bedding are great quality.
Wells is a great base for visiting Hunstanton, Sheringham, Holt, Cromer, Holkham and there are some lovely restaurants locally.
Bang in Wells comes thoroughly recommended for a breakfast spot, pre- bookings are advised, this place is extremely popular!
Flour is also a must visit as well the Golden Fleece and Two Magpies.
Buckets and nets from the local shop are cheaper than buying crabbing accessories down on the front. Sardines or smoked bacon lardons will attract many a crab!
The beach huts at Wells are also available to hire - a quick google search will help you find one. Peak season is approx £65 for the day - sounds a lot but you’ll appreciate it if you’re there for the day.
There is NO onsite parking as listed. There is parking locally down side streets (if you can find space) or on the Buttlands (again, good luck!) failing that the 3 minute walk to the nearest pay and display is £44 to park for the week. We chose this option, and then soon realised once you moved your car out for a day trip, we had to be mindful of when to return as the car park is also really busy and there was a couple of times we had to park elsewhere then move it later on in the evening.
The house is also on a main road meaning we heard all kinds of traffic no matter the time of day, people walking past, as well as cars/vans etc. The house is also adjacent to a pub, so late night drinkers, early morning (07:20) bottle bins and empty beer barrel dragging - just a mindful note if you were looking for somewhere peaceful this isn’t the place.
The refuse bins are located just outside the back of the property which attracted flies so we chose not to eat in the garden area which is a shame given the glorious weather we’ve just had.
There are cleaning supplies to help leave the home as we found it, but the hoover has seen better days and even though we tried to use it, the hoovering was a painful task - please look at replacing this.

The photos gave us the impression that rooms in the property were larger than they actually were.
The property sleeps upto 6 people but there are only 4 dining chairs.
There are several large stains on the furniture and there are areas on the walls that require some TLC.
Considering the points above, we did not feel that the £1,250 cost of the stay in late September was good value for money.
