The Space:
Bellbird Sauna Retreat is an architect-designed one-bedroom cabin tucked into a leafy Ōwhata garden, reworked into a private wellness getaway for two. Locally sourced Macrocarpa timber lines the cabin inside and out, with a mural by award-winning Rotorua artist Mark Noble - and the Redwoods are five minutes down the road.

- SAUNA, BATH & OUTDOOR AREA -
This is what sets Bellbird apart. Step out to a private outdoor sauna - switch it on, give the rocks 30-45 minutes to heat, then ladle water over them for steam. From the sauna, pad barefoot along a walkway of smooth river stones, laid to massage your feet, to the freestanding bath - run it hot to soak or cold to plunge, and alternate between the two for the full ritual. A fire pit circled with river stones is made for evenings under the stars, with a pebbled seating area alongside and a covered BBQ area for cooking out in any weather. The deck and gardens wrap the cabin for privacy.
- PARKING -
Free off-street parking on site. A small lockable tin shed is handy for storing bikes if you're riding the Redwoods trails.
Guest Access:
The whole cabin and garden are yours - sauna, outdoor bath, fire pit, BBQ and pebbled seating included. Free off-street parking on site, plus a lockable shed for bikes. Self check-in via key safe from 3 pm. We're a Rotorua-based team, here if you need anything.
The Neighborhood:
Bellbird Sauna Retreat sits in Ōwhata, a quiet residential suburb on the eastern edge of Rotorua and a short hop from the lakes. The Whakarewarewa Redwoods Forest and its world-class mountain-bike and walking trails are about five minutes away - bring or hire bikes for one of New Zealand's best trail networks. Te Puia's geysers are around eight minutes, and the lakefront, Eat Streat dining and the hot pools at Polynesian Spa and Wai Ariki Spa about ten. Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Rotokakahi (Green Lake) are a ten-minute drive for a swim or a bush walk. Skyline's gondola and luge, Rotorua Canopy Tours and Zorb sit over on the western side of town, around eighteen minutes away.
Getting Around:
A car is the easiest way to get around Rotorua, and there's free off-street parking on site. Ōwhata is handy to the eastern side of the city - the Redwoods are about five minutes away (a short drive, or a ride for keen cyclists), central Rotorua and the lakefront around ten, and Te Puia about eight. Skyline, Canopy Tours and Zorb are roughly eighteen minutes on the far side of town. Rotorua Airport is only about seven minutes away.
Other Things to Note:
The outdoor bath can be run as a hot bath or filled cold as a plunge pool - pair it with the sauna for the full hot-and-cold ritual. The sauna heater is pre-set: switch it on at the foot-level switch below the walkway and allow 30-45 minutes to heat, then use the bucket and scoop to pour water over the rocks for steam. Inside, heating is by heat pump and a pellet fire (spare pellets are in the garden shed), and the kitchen has an induction cooktop (no oven). There's a Smart TV, and wifi throughout.
