Accommodation not for us. Dishonest handling of payments

Location was close to Hertford restaurants and bars and there was a corner shop up the road. The views are beautiful.

In our opinion, the standard of accommodation did not match the description provided by the property owner, and several improvements are needed to justify the £144 per night charge. After our stay, I shared this feedback with the owner and confirmed I was available to discuss it. I also mentioned that other guests we spoke to had similar negative experiences. The owner did not respond but instead told Booking.com that I was a 'no-show,' which could have resulted in a fine. Fortunately, I was able to prove our stay, and Booking.com waived the fee. I also informed Booking.com that I had accidentally paid the property owner twice. The owner acknowledged the overpayment via text and assured me of a refund, but after a week, I had still not received it. When Booking.com reached out on my behalf, the owner became hostile—calling me a liar and a 'disgusting' person—while also falsely claiming I had made no payments at all. I have since provided bank statements proving both transactions. Had the experience been handled honestly, I would have left a neutral review simply stating that the property wasn’t for us and needed improvements. However, given the dishonesty in their communication (that we were a 'no-show' and had made no payments) and their refusal to refund my accidental payment, I cannot recommend this property. Given the nature of their responses so far, I am nervous about leaving this review and the potential repercussions, but I feel it is important to share our experience.
