A little difficult without a car but can get taxi from Nakashibetsu

Set along a river (and thermal springs) visited by Blakistons fish owl, a Martin (or Sable) and many other native birds, this spa-onsen hotel was an absolute treat!! The property is large and sprawling, with large sized rooms- or suites- with lovely furnishings, and huge full sized windows to enjoy the snowy scenery and flowing river. One of the best onsens I've ever been to- maybe the best, as there are many indoor and outdoor with 3 sauna/ steam rooms, traditional wood lined bathing pools, laying down, tree-trunk cauldron, cold plunges and then even more pools outside - with large stones placed for different postures. There is a mixed onsen set down next to river for true Shinrin-yoku, accessed via a side door from both ladies and mens. There is no English signage to tell you this, however it's pointed out on the map (which i didn't see, haha). Dinner (included in the Bookings.com reservation) was an amazing Kaiseki feast, only interrupted by the announcement from the waiter that the owl had arrived, and so diners with their cameras brought to tea-at-the-ready rushed to the observation area- perfectly lit, and glass cleaned for the occasion. Watch for the Martin, who lives under the deck, come out and distract the owl, whilst hoping for some fishy bits to fall. Would like to return and stay longer next time!
