Machiya 京 Asakusa

We loved this place. We stayed at the property for the end of our Japan tour and we enjoyed the quieter neighbourhood to end our visit that still had easy access to shops and restaurants, and a 5 minute walk to the train (Tobu Skytree line, although there are other train/bus options). This is a cute 2-storey house in a nice neighbourhood - the neighbours' trees outside the door are all beautifully trimmed. The style is traditional, but updated with modern conveniences like electronic panel water heating control and good air con. I loved having a clothes steam wand for the crumpled clothes in my suitcase. The comms with the owner/manager were timely and helpful, although we never met anyone. Tomtom Italian down the road is recommended.

After 4 days we were missing having a chair/couch downstairs, but understand this would compromise the minimalist traditional style. With beds upstairs, we sat on the stairs instead. Tall people will need to duck a lot - but this is pretty standard in Japan.
