The home kept pristine. They have put up signs in english explaining a lot of things about the home and Japanese culture in general. The owner is a very nice lady. You are in good hands staying at Sofuan.

This traditional home was a real treat. The garden was magical on a rainy morning. The host was lovely and very helpful. This is the property I will remember from our trip to Japan.
The home is large enough for families (we were five adults). Steep stairs mean the young or elderly should sleep in the tatami room on the main floor.

A truly unique experience. Our gracious hostess, Ms. Fujita, welcomed us with freshly prepared matcha and mochi. The machiya is spacious, spotless, and has very comfortable beds and futons. There are small handwritten cards throughout the house detailing historical information and conservation efforts. The washer/dryer combo works great. The stairs require some agility. The small garden is magical in the rain.
It’s a very short walk to either the Omicho market (best seafood!) or the Kanazawa Castle. The taxi ride to and from the station is about ¥1200 (less than $10). Be sure to have the address in Japanese ready to show the cab driver.
All in all, we highly recommend this machiya.

What an amazing stay I had at Sofuan in Kanazawa. The property was beautiful and well maintained and the area is unbelievable. I could stay there forever. The host was wonderful and was very patient while I practiced my japanese with her during the check-in process. I was lucky enough to be there for an annual festival at Oyama shrine (only a 5min walk from the house) and it blew me away. You can get to some amazing places in just a 15min walk including the Higashi Chay District and the Samurai District. The fish market was in the backyard basically and was a great place to explore in the mornings. I will definitely be staying here again!
