I would highly recommend this for families of young kids. They had lots of features and play areas for young kids. And LOTS of young kids were there! I would not recommend this if you are looking for more of an adult get away haven with an escalated feel. We stayed at a different Shiobara lodge last year at the same time which was less money but about the same or better (except for the food- the other hotel had frozen bentos but a choice of 5 kinds). This is your basic Japanese hotel with tatami mat rooms. We stayed here for 4 nights over the New Year holiday. It had a nice buffet dinner of hotpot and they made some special New Year food over our stay which was a nice touch. But besides being a buffet with choices, every night eating the same meal was so-so. The tatami rooms were basic . Some staining on the sliding closet doors from condensation but looks like they had tried to update them to a certain extent. Still relatively old feel and the baths themselves needed some upgrading- floating black mold, etc. For the price we paid it was not up to par. The international staff was nice and very hardworking but sometimes it showed in the body odor. Which was unpleasant. Shiobara is a lovely town but has lost the lustre it might have had sometime ago. Some of the largest hotels have gone under which is unfortunate. It is not a ghost town but many of the buildings seem to be shuttered for good which is sad. Hope this town can work to revitalize. And average stay for the high cost paid, but it was New Years time.
