新島々駅から上高地行きの早朝シャトルバスに乗るのにとても便利な立地でした。周辺はとても静かで、夜には近くを流れる川の音も聞こえて、とてもリラックスできました。上高地へ行く前にゆっくり休める、快適な滞在でした。 The stay was very comfortable and convenient for taking the early morning shuttle to Kamikochi from Shin-Shimashima Station. The area was very quiet and relaxing, and I could even hear the sound of the river flowing nearby at night. Overall, it was a peaceful and pleasant place to rest before the trip.

唯一少し気になったのは、夜に駅から宿まで歩く道が一部暗かったことです。場所によっては街灯が少なく、スマホのライトを使いながら歩きました。ただ、ゴールデンウィーク中だったこともあり車通りがあり、不安は感じませんでした。 The only small inconvenience was the walk from the station to the property at night. Some parts of the road were a bit dark, so I had to use my phone flashlight while walking. However, there were still street lights in many areas, and during Golden Week there were enough cars passing by that I did not feel unsafe.

今回は特に無しですが、他の客次第では良くない評価になる可能性はありました。

The owner of the place is wonderful. She is very kind and sweet. The place is maintained quite cleanly.

I think this place is great for one night stay. I stayed for 3 nights which was my mistake. While I had no problem leaving the guesthouse at 8.30 am every morning, these are a few things that were not good: 1. 800 yen for shower is really high. The place charges $20 a night (through booking.com) in a 9 bed dorm, so an additional $5.50 for shower is high. Especially when you can go to a nice onsen in the city for 500 yen. 2. How you sleep is really dependent on everyone else in the room. I slept well the first night, thanks to considerate travelers. But the second and third night, the fellow travelers were really loud and it was hard to get any decent sleep. While this issue is everywhere, the open plan of the room and beds being very close to each other, makes it much harder here. When the rules for everything else are quite strict, I wish these were too. 3. There is one single pit toilet for the entire place. The sink which you use to wash hands, brush teeth, wash your face is also where you fill your water bottle for water to drink. 4. As a traveler that uses public transportation and walking, the location wasn’t extra convenient for anything. You still have to walk 20 mins to Shinshimashima station to get to Kamikochi or Matsumoto. It is however better for people traveling by car or bike. While these rules are explained in the pictures of the booking, it’s hard to understand how much they cause an inconvenience until you stay there. I think, personally, I should’ve stayed in Matsumoto since you can get a dorm for under $25 which includes shower, kitchen to cook, coffee and tea, and you don’t have to leave between 8.30 am to 7.30 pm. I would’ve still been okay with everything expect 2 out of 3 nights, I couldn’t sleep much. :(
