I missed a lot in the communication. The messages exchanged through Booking were unanswered, the messages sent by the accommodation even said "don't reply, this is an unattended mailbox". The only way to get in touch was apparently by phone. Maybe it's an idea to leave a kind of "welcome note" in the apartment with some general info and policies? Half an hour before arriving, a "reminder" was sent to remember to bring towels and sheets as there aren't any in the house. Which would be fine if this info was available when booking which it wasn't. The website isn't clear on when cleaning charges apply. I expect there won't be any for us though, because we left the apartment in a cleaner state than we found it.
